So there has to be diversity to bring several music policy's together to work as one. but then again, what do you call trance music, do you call it OMG ARMIN HANDS UP trance or do you call it a state of mind? thats where the big split lies and thats what seems to have been lost with the evolution of the more commercial style of trance productions. |
This reminds of a thread some time back about 'the state of trance in melbourne'.
When I am refferring to trance I mean the stuff typically played by Armin, Tiesto, Schulz, PVD, A&B, etc. And some of the stuff these DJ's play dip strongly into other genre's/sub genre's. Trance these days is obviously influenced by other styles/genre's the lines dividing can be a little blurred as we all know. Especially when comparing to the stuff in the 'hey days'.
I guess its a tough nut to crack, especially breaking down that association it has in melbourne. Gawd I remember seeing some older female partying going friends recently, they were talking about how they love house/electro and screwed up their faces when I said I like trance. Then when I jumped into their car they had an old gatecrasher CD from pre-2000 playing universal nation and some other trance classics. 'I thought you hated trance?'.. 'We do, but we love this' :conf:
And when I say successful, I guess I mean a regular/weekly, decent size venue relatively packed. There have been a number of small successful parties which is awesome, but generally not enough numbers to warrant a bigger venue or regular weekly bash. |

the answer to this question is-
back in the day massive events werent as common so trance was played in clubs which were a regular thing for people
these days large events happen all the time... all the time. Trance has evolved into being a large event type of music rather than club style music. House has evolved as has techno and now these types of music are what runs big thru clubs
its that simple... unfortunately |

to go to a club these days to listen to trance means u have to be an enthusiast
to go to a big event and listen to whatever, as long as its fun, is easier |

imo and this is mine:-
the key to getting a proper 'club trance' night going on a weekly basis is the first 4 hours.
The majority of nights giving it a crack tend to take themselves a bit to seriously and the first coupla hours end up trying to be like the first couple of hours of a big festival night like godskitchen.
the thing is that as its a club night the joint is ready to go from 11pm - a good percentage of the crowd just wanna have a drink, have a bit of a dance and pick up.
markus shultz prog trance from 11-1 is just not gunna push a crowd into overdrive. - and so what happens is that dedicated crowd kinda gets into it but the passers thru who are looking for fun...just pass through.by 1am you have a half empty club that degenerates into an empty club.
the key is to mash up some of those prog trance hits with something a little more club friendly. (*ie electro and house). Generally (note the generally) the prog trance of today (im talking main stream) is not designed for a small/medium club environment - its made for internet radio and big events...it has no bounce or fun.
my 2c.
its also interesting that someone brought up the old MOS cd's...i used to love that ...yunno why - yeah they had heaps of trance on em...but they had heaps of other on em at the same time..thats what made them so good and thats what every1 seems to forget these days. |

jules you know i agree with what you said above.. first time you've made sense to me in about 2 years lol
100% trance doesnt work.. pete tong styled night house - proggy - trance (and then at the end chuck in a dash of psy/tech/whatever) is a pretty sweet spot
a trance night is not the answer, but a night that has some trance in it really.. just make the trance the peak time middle night set |

well that's a misleading question, most of the tunes used were produced by others... not Tiesto ;)
Unless of course you're referring to Silence (Tiesto remix) and the like.
To TOP, recent news reports of OD's at trance/dance events surely doesn't help the scene or promoters trying to hold more events. |

I take it you haven't been to a Sunny/Darkbeat gig if you think people don't dance to prog.... |

Has anyone tried this? Maybe even firing up a club at an earlier time. Like 9pm or something. Starting with the more commercial, house/electro, prog, dipping into some trance, etc.
Another thing that puts some people off, me being one of them, is needing to be awake until 5am to hear a good trance set. By the time I can actually hear something good and the night is pumping I am ready for bed and over it. Yes Yes I am an old man, but I have been there done that. |
