$1000 will get you a pretty fancy MIDI keyboard...
I have an M-Audio Axiom 49 and it works fine.
Just to make sure that you're clear on this: MIDI keyboards don't generate sound by themselves. They just send note and velocity signals to your computer, which uses programs to generate sounds. |

I suggest reading this guide http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm.
So first you must understand that you don't really need a keyboard especially one that is $1,000 dollars you only need software such as cubase, fl studio, ableton live etc. softsynths, sound card, and optionally a midi keyboard. |

Actually, long before you get any of that stuff, you should download demos of different sequencers and try to see which one you like the most; then buy that.
After that, you should learn thoroughly how to use the synthesizers and samplers in whatever program you get, learn about basic principles of melody and chord progression, and get some hands-on experience by writing a few rough tracks.
Then, once you've finished all of that, you should start looking at monitors, professional headphones, audio interfaces, and so on. |
