western digital is the most solid manufacturer imho. but that doesnt mean you need to get a MyBook or something. many of the other brands use WD drives, you just have to poke around a bit to find out what they are running inside|

ehh i disagree. i find seagate to be even more solid in my experience. plus they have a better customer satisfaction. an old friend of mine had a 4gb scsi drive that he got from someone that failed. it was still under warranty, but barely. he got the rma and had a replacement 2 weeks later.

edit//also i would HIGHLY recommend Lacie (pronounced La-see) drives. i have one and its solid. i dropped it, which of course is my fault, and the drive itself failed. i was able to get the case open and replace the drive. yay! fixed. it went from 250gb to 500gb. :D they are also cheap. and they offer a wide variety of options and a few styles. i want their lego brick styled ones! they stack too!

seagate ftw.

yeah i prefer seagate over any manufacturer. they have a much better record and to top it off, they are a major server storage manufacturer. cant go wrong with someone whose been in the server storage business since pretty much the beginning.
jupiterone
faacckkkk seagate. my seagate external the deck after about month of moderate use while my WD mybook is standing strong!

those are totally rad. i'd love to have 3 or 4 of those stacked on my desk, but i have no use for that much HD space. i'm currently saving my pennies for a Toshiba 250GB portable HD, so i can just keep all my work/music on there and bring it with me between the office and home.

I would recommend seagate. They are industry leaders and have the best warranty last I checked. (No, I don't own stock in them...............)

Allied Nations
my mybook pro 500 crapped out on me

luckily they sent a replacement in like 4 days

still lost a bunch of data :(

I have heard a lot of bad comments about Lacie.
Poor performance, low stability etc.

Now if it's for standard usage the person who started this thread shouldn't have too much of a hard time ... usb should be fine.

Me I need Firewire minimum. And my next purchase ( when I have the funds ) will be a ! TB sata external. Video editing is a biatch.
