hey guys i mostly produce dark trance and or techno ,that does not usually have much drive in it. but recently heard lots of epic and progressive tracks online,so now i want to make my own version of a progressive trance track to see what i come up with. Id just like to know the best way to inect drive into the tracks and or builds and climax, plateus etc.
Im not looking for anyones secrets or anything like that just in general terms ,id like you guys to share some tips on this subject.

Hihats can give alot of extra energy, try pulling them forward a tick or so, so they hit earlier to give the push effect.
Call and response stabs and a good feeling for rhythm?
Sidechained compression to give a pumping effect, adjust the attack / release to give a push or pull effect.
Your drum and bass tuned together - using opposite styles to give either a bounce or drive: i.e. punchy kick and low bass (think psy trance) or big kick and tight bass (think old hard trance) or maybe equal levels (e.g older happy hardcore) for a mushy/techy sound |

Its really about how all sounds work together and relate to each other. |

I'd say you should always try sidechaining, varying the amount... Slight sidechaining can give you some more drive without the classic pump sound.. |

- Sidechained pads.
- A rolling bassline pattern.
- Synths stabs that don't follow the 4/4 time singature strictly.
- Shuffle/swing on the hihats and maybe even on the bassline and some of the synths.
- A strong offbeat hihat and ride cymbal.
These are some of the techniques I use. |

Play the main melody in triplet time but with a send delay set to 4/4 time. give the note a little nudge that works some times. |

Why are people so obsessed with sidechaining? Seems to be the suggestion for just about anything. |

Bad / n00b producers are obsessed with sidechaining and the illogical belief that you can't have a bass and kick at the same time.
However in this situation it can give extra movement and drive, na dit depends on what you sidechain. Try running it over a reverb send that your percussion is being run through for a breathing effect. |

I've got a bottle of drive in my fridge. I get a clean syringe, draw about 3 mL, get rid up air bubbles and pump that in. |

so basically there is no one main ingredient ,it all really comes down to the placement of each of the elements in your track how you tweak them and how they react to each other ,so you guys pretty much answered my question ,now i know what i need to do ,pay more attention to the overall mix than the main riff.
Mr Mystery i agree with you i actually never used sidechaining once.
thoughtless without drive you dont have trance. |
