Can you tell the difference between 128kbps and 320kbps? (pg. 2)

| Well I was posting this not only to see if the average person could tell the difference, but the way it was presented it was as if there is a select group of people who are able to recognize the difference, and there is the rest who have dull hearing and cannot tell any difference. I guess that's not the case though? |

I'd never play a 128 out, so I haven't got the foggiest - but I still don't think when it comes to 192/320 CBR, most people aren't going to be able to tell the difference on a huge club system. |

| 128 is the bare minimum for music. I'd say the difference between 320 and cd is similar to the difference between 256 and 320... sure its not that much but... the extra clarity still improves things a fair bit. 128 v.s. 320 is ing obvious though. |

the whole thing depends on what you are listening to it on. If you are using multimedia speakers than i can get people saying they cant tell the difference. |

These things also depend on the characteristics of the music. I remember attending a lecture about psycho-acoustics and audio encoding, where we analysed various files and codecs, and found that in many cases there's no (or hardly any) audible difference between 192 and cd quality. But the result may vary quite a bit if different pieces of music are used.
Some guy claimed mp3 doesn't work so well for classical music. |

i actually found that really hard, couldnt hear almost any difference. but figured after listening each 3 times, it 'might' be .. and got it right.
i got speakers. and ear phones lol.. |

Quite honestly, I got it wrong. Maybe my hearing is too poor, maybe my headphones aren't good enough or maybe I just can't tell the difference.
However... Spoilers here for anyone who wants to and hasn't yet taken it:
I could tell they sounded different. Sample A was slightly louder than Sample B and I played them pretty loud, loud enough for the stab at the end to hurt slightly. Sample B seemed clearer though despite being a bit quieter. Perhaps my mistake was to look for perceived clarity rather than fullness of sound. |

| Perhaps it doesnt matter for a sample like that, but for a 'busy' EDM sample with lots of stuff going on at any one time, higher bitrate makes a huge difference. |

| I got it right, but I was really hoping for more than just a single clip. The site would be a lot more interesting if it had 20 or 50 clips of various genres and "busy-ness" to analyze. |
