So out of nowhere a few days ago my computer came down with a nasty case of I have no idea what. I've defragged, run virus protection, been reeeeeeally anal over my startup apps and whatnot (msconfig has three things still checked), i've gone over hijack this logs and there's nothing out of the ordinary, and even when in task manager i've closed things to get it down to about 12 processes (all that I need running), it still s up. So yeah, I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what's wrong.
Oh and for the problem, everything lags/is choppy as all hell. Here's a recording of me playing the riff from weezer - say it ain't so pretty accurately, and how my computer records it.

| is it just audio? or everything? |

| when it gets reeeeeeeeally bad its everything, but audio regardless. like when i had it down to 10-15 processes the cpu load was still bouncing between 50-100% just idling |

idk, then. have you tried letting it sit for 15-20 min. after it starts up?
if it's just audio, depending on the card you're using, there's some recent update that's been needed to fix some buffer issues, but aside from that, idk. |

| Yeah i'm not computer illiterate by any means, but I really have no idea whats doing this. Letting it sit doesn't help either. CPU load slowly goes down but the second i hit record its fuxed again. |

I doubt it's this...but try running a full ad-aware scan anyway:

It can pick up things your antivirus misses.
I also recommend you find out what type of sound card and video card you have installed and download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website. Once you update the drivers and reboot, most problems tend to go away. |

| i'd also like to recommend "ccleaner" & "spybot", in addition to MS Updates. |

| Ditto on the MS updates, and try to reinstall the soundcard drivers? Sounds like you comp is trying to process sounds through the CPU rather than through the onboard chip on the soundcard. Are your settings correct in the audio program that you use? I used to have extremely choppy sound in Traktor, when it was emulating ASIO... switched to hardware and voila! |

Well, if you have Realtek card (but i think it works for other cards as well try searching for the indexed Diabolical box shown on the Pic and unchecking the damn thing.
its usually in recording settings.

well it sounds like a spyware/virus deal.
you should check everything in *safe mode* tho. hit f8 or something similar(it depends sometimes) when you boot up. this wont load anything but the basics so running a check or defrag is best. plus you can load individual apps or drivers to see if they function fine or just as bad| |
