Disturbing?

So yesterday I went through airport security with a piece of equipment for work in my carry-on. It is a black metal box with no label on it except the word transmitter.

I completely expected them to search my bags and bomb-test it but I was prepared to deal with whatever hassle they decided to give me. But I was in total shock when they did not even stop me or ask to look at my bags.

Although it saved me some time in getting to my gate, I am slightly disturbed that you can take a metal black box onto an airplane (at a New York airport, no less) and yet they search me every time my hair tie sets off the metal detector.

Does anyone else find this alarming?

I do find it disturbing because they usually investigate the smallest things and that I would expect them to investigate. Maybe putting it through the x-ray machine was enough?

see, i thought that putting it through the x-ray would make it suspicious. i mean, if you saw a black box in there, what would you think?

well.. xrays go through things, so whatever was insde the black box whether it was metal or wood, they could see; if it didn't alarm them, then they really could care less

what the hell r u gonan do with the black metal box????

duh .. put a bomb in it :D

Back at Sydney airport a few weeks back they had a big press conference showing off how good their new sniffer dogs are at finding drugs and undeclared foodstuffs etc.

Some journo took a few sandwiches with him, and none of the dogs noticed :D

the x-ray can't see inside it, so it could be anything...
but mine just had some wires and switches.

the worst part is, this is the second time i have gone through this - i keep forgetting to mail stuff ahead of time.
the last time, the box was bigger and had a button on it and some flashing lights. they actually tested that one, and I showed them the paperwork to explain what the thing does. they didn't really understand it so they let me go through.

When I was travelling back to Europe from San Francisco last month, I was pulled in for further examination before entering the plane. I took of my coat, put it on the floor, was searched, my bag was emptied and the contents scrutinized, and then I took on my coat and boarded the plane. I could easily have had several wooden knives and bags with chemicals in the coat without security noticing (before I eventually revealed it and commanded the pilots to "go to Cuba").

I found it funny though - wasn't chocked. After all, this world is basically built on trust, and there's no such thing as air-tight security. The old saying of "trust is good - control is better - razzia is best" have limited impact in the modern world. If you want to do harm to people you *can* do it.
Of course some level of security helps keep the impulse bomber and the mentally ill in check (although Richard Reid somehow managed to get through), but I'd claim that any sane, cynical person who are willing to think things through would be able to get through.

Just accept it as a hazard, like cancer and traffic.

honestly.. if someone really wants to blow up an airplane, they will.. its been proven... no matter how good security is, I dont think theres any way around that

word. And that is the reason, why security should not be too invasive! I mean the idea of airport security is to prevent random idiots be 'copycats'.. i think we are all aware that if you want to high-jack/ blow up an airplane and have sufficient resources, it is not a problem

i don't know if you ever noticed this, but i find the searches at exit 100x more invasive than any time i was ever searched at an airport, even when they took my shoes.
