Toronto police crack down on taxis refusing fares

Dozens of Entertainment District taxi drivers face charges under Toronto's Municipal Code in an effort by officers to tackle a "dangerous" trend where they say some cabs refuse short rides.
Forty-five cab inspections were conducted on Friday and Saturday nights, resulting in 35 cab-related charges, including 21 for refusing the first fare.
Plainclothes officers laid the charges in a blitz, called "Take me home." It was prompted by officers who patrol the area as party-goers come flooding out of clubs. They said many taxi drivers are refusing rides to people who are only traveling a short distance, likely based on monetary gain.
Police said the result is a dangerous and congested situation, where competition for cabs causes fights or leaves people stranded in the street.
Most charges were laid between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., an hour police say most violent crimes take place. |

GOOD!
ing some of those guys are s. I have been refused a ride a few different times. Another thing they do is start charging flat rates at night. One time he was gonna charge me $15 to go home when it only cost like $6 earlier in the night to get there..

| I never got refused, but I got an earfull when it was freezing, and too cold to walk 8 blocks to get to my car. "I waited in the taxi line 1hr, just to take you down the street?" he said. |

| got refused 3 times at the ing docks at 4am once because i lived in downtown which was considered "too close" (still a $15 fare) as opposed to scarborough or markham. 4th guy was about to get laid out on a stretcher had he refused too... |

After enjoying an enjoy night at Guv (I believe UltraSpin) My girlfriend and I were one of the few hundred Guv faithful, who ignored weather storm warnings and decided to go to enjoy Laidback Luke in The Gallery.
As we decide to leave to our hotel (Yonge & Dundas), I notice something odd, there isn't a sea of taxi's harassing us as we leave.
In fact there isn't even one driver...it is -20, we have just been hit with the biggest snowstorm of 2007(literally) I am high as in soaking wet clothing, and my girlfriend in of course, open toed heels and a dress.
As we braved it by walking to the exit ramp at yonge only a stonesthrow from the ACC, countless cabbies, actually locked their doors on us, one actually going through a red light to avoid us.
after about 30 mins of this and hiding behind pillars to block the wind chill, one says he'll come back for us only if we tip him additional $15.00.
With my girlfriend in disarray what could i do?
as we headed up yonge people we're struggling with each step, literally begging cabs to stop, almost to a whimper and a whine. The cabbies all waved and smiled as they passed, as if it was an inside joke. I swear on my life that I saw a couple who didn't look like they were in good shape beg for a lift, the boyfriend/husband/lover? actually laid down in the snow blocking the cab, and all the cab would do is honk.
I asked the cabbie why are they refusing, he said well it's either a change in shift, or the people live downtown and can walk.
Once we arrived to our hotel, the fare was $7.50 thats all the cabbie got. In return he replied "my friend, we had a deal", to which I replied "here's the deal, go yourself".
I had sympathy after hearing how alot of cabbie's are underpaid, abused etc, I'd always tip well, make conversation the whole ride...now i geeve |

| I learned a while back, get in the cab before you tell them where you're going. |

| they are a pain in the ass. When a guest here at the hotel needs a cab to union station we don't even ask the cabbies outside. We just open the door and let the guest get in. |
