vocal reverse reverb or fade in?

Hey everyone, I was just wondering how one would go about doing the lead-in for when a vocal comes in... For example, in a vocal trance tune or even in chillout or progressive or whatever it may be, 10 seconds before the vocal hits, there's like a leadin or a reverse reverb that rises to it. I've tried reverbing it and then reversing it but it didn't sound the same. Below I've linked a small clip for EXACTLY what I mean (a bit old, for lack of not being to find any other tune at the moment, although it's in plenty vocal tunes).... It almost sounds like the singer is inhaling her notes instead of speaking them... It seems simple, as so many artists have been doing it for years (there's trance tunes I have from 1998 that feature this effect), but I don't know how to do it! Is there any general way to do it, which doesn't matter which program I produce with? Or if not, I produce with Reason, so does anyone know how it's done there haha... | Take a short segment of the vocal track (usually the first syllable of the opening line), add a long reverb with a smooth and consistent decay to it, and bounce it to a new clip. Then, reverse the clip and position it so that the build ends where your actual vocals start. You may need to play with the clip gain to bring it up to a suitable level. |

What he said. Can be done easily with most audio software.
In reason the advanced reverb has a patch called reverse (or something I can't remember) That also produces this effect quite well. |

Reverse the sample
Stick a reverb on it
save/bounce
re-reverse it back to the right way round.
May need to do it a few times to get the desired result but it works well.
Tried and tested technique... something like cooledit is perfect for this. |

| Theres a similar effect you can get in Reaktor using a grain sampler. Have a look at the hybrid video in the videos thread for an example. |

Not listened to the sample yet (will do later) but an important part would be the characteristic of the singer involved - does he/she breath in heavily before singing?
You could ask your vocalist to do this deliberately, you could mike closer and have them whisper the vocals and compress to bring the volume of the in breath up then use this in the rev-reverb trick? |

that brings out lots of noise if not done correctly... :) |

This sounds like the winner... I used to put a second of it with a lot of reeverb and simply reverse it, but didn't quite sound right. But this sounds like what will get the desired effect, thanks! |
