No, but I honestly have a lot more fun playing Doom than I do playing Doom 3. |
I'm actually gonna agree with that statement. Doom 2 especially. |

i think RPGs is one of the areas where designers have made the most significant improvements. indeed, old RPGs werent really RPGs at all ;)

Theres not really a lot of originality in the gaming world atm, hence the trend of heading back to the classics, and sequels galore. |
this is true, however one must appreciate that it was far easier to be innovative 20 years ago (because there was far more room for improvement/innovation). Whilst I might be critical of newer trends on occasion, I also realise that it is like a million times harder to make a successful game now than in ye olde days.

but are you willing to criticise doom 2 for basically being doom 1 with a new shotgun? there's no way i'd play doom again, lack of mouselook or 3d models or as much skill compared to modern shooters. Awesome for its time (indeed its why I sold my console) but for me doom 3 was easily a better game (though im a big scaredy cat). |

I guess that's why you like it then. I prefer more action-oriented super fast games. Doom3 was entertaining for me for the first 15 minutes or so, and then once I figured out a monster was always going to pop up behind me or turn around the corner, it became a total borefest. I couldn't actually bring myself to finish the whole game.
I would've loved to have doom 3 actually play like doom 1 and 2, with similar gameplay and similar art style, but using the new engine to add some new physics and mechanics, but seeing as that wasn't the case, I'd still prefer having the old classic gameplay of doom, even if it has crappy 2d sprites and primitive movement physics. It's fun and that's all that matters to me. |

another good example would be the UT series.
I have every UT game, and yet I find myself most often going back to UT99, because it's just the most fun out of the series.
People always bring up the graphics when comparing the UT titles, but honestly - I don't even like UT3's graphics all that much. The technical graphics are excellent of course - the engine is amazing, but the actual art itself is crap. It's like they were so concerned with showcasing the capabilities of their new cool engine that they loaded every wall of every room with as many pipes, ducts, panels and flashing lights as they could possibly fit in. Then they made everything glow and added flashy animations everywhere. There's just so much visual clutter in that game that in many instances it just kills the gameplay completely. Sadly this has become pretty much standard - just because there's so much stigma associated with boxy and simplistic map design. But really - UT99s maps were clean and simple. You always knew exactly where you were going and what was going on - and that was a big part of what made the gameplay great. So I really wouldn't call UT3 a better game than UT99. However the engine certainly has improved a lot. |

but i think that has more to do with age, imagination and jadedness.

disagree. games keep getting better, its that our standards are also higher.
side by side, is anyone really gonna tell me that wolf-3d is a better game than crysis? |
Well Crysis and Wing commander are on even ground IMO. They are getting a bit better... but the average quality is going down. That's all. Strategy in particular is certainly getting much better though. |

yeah, but something like q3 is infinitely better than q1 ever was. i do agree with you though, that the first unreal, and the first UT were the best of the series.
i think, for the most part, games are improving, otherwise us old timers wouldnt keep playing ;) |

Absolutely agree with that. Just about anything released back in the day was a groundbreaking idea, and it is very difficult to be original these days. There is still plenty of creativity out their were not seeing though. |

I definately agree about Q3 - but I think examples like this are too few. Or maybe I really have grown old and jaded. I just get the impression that most newer games - save a few exceptions (bioshock for example) - just aren't as fun as older games were. However I don't think this means those days are dead and gone. There's a bunch of upcoming titles I'm really looking foward to, compared to a few years ago when there was absolutely nothing I was looking foward to. |

Wow just finished watching this: http://www.wcnews.com/holovids/full_length_wing3.shtml
it's just awesome. Its 97% fmv and a little tiny bit of ingame footage. Defenitly worth watching regardless of whether you play wing commander or not. Very good :toocool: |

| I just bought Quake 3 and I'm loving just beating up on bots. I'm no pro even by a long shot, but it's just a really great FPS frag fest. |
