Police and health officials are expected to spend the next several days sifting through the chemicals and equipment discovered at a Mississauga industrial unit following a bust on what may be the biggest meth lab in GTA history.
Following up on tips from suspicious neighbours, heavily-armed officers from both Toronto and Peel region descended Tuesday afternoon on an industrial complex at 1645 Sismet Rd., in the Dixie and Highway 401 area, where they were immediately greeted by the strong smell of an unknown chemical.
The highly-addictive drug was reportedly cooking when authorities arrived and police arrested at least four people at the scene.
"We didn't realize the size," Staff Inspector Don Campbell of Toronto Police said Tuesday. "We received some complaints from the people here. They had some suspicions about the building. Our main concern right now is that the chemicals are reacting and that's why we expanded the hot zone."
The officers that initially arrived at the scene then moved out of the suspect unit and waited for expert teams to arrive.
Authorities say there were two large chemical cookers on site and fire officials and experts from Health Canada are expected to be at the scene for several days inspecting the ingredients and equipment found there. The chemicals used to make crystal meth are extremely dangerous and potentially explosive.
There were 11 emergency vehicles on site Wednesday, including Mississauga Fire's entire hazardous material team.
It's still not known exactly how much of the drug was seized or where it was intended to be sold, but authorities believe it may have been destined for the streets of the GTA.
