SD: What's left for EDM?

Giant at 2028.... and.... nothing else. I know Giant, I've been to Giant, I like Giant, but they are booking so many djs coming through on promo tours that it's more like you're hearing their latest record than an actually good set. Armin next week will be him spinning 1/3 of Imagine, like it has been on the rest of his current tour. I like Armin, in fact I really like ASOT circa a year or two ago, but Imagine is awful.
I spent last night in the Gaslamp and pretty much every club was spinning Def Leppard over hip hop beats into Bon Jovi over some billboard track. I had a lot of fun, but it absolutely kills me the music quality in san diego. Everyone knows live bands don't come to san diego, but you would think the DJs here would have a bit more taste. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say in their bedrooms they are spinning that would sell out arenas in europe, but Bon Jovi? Bon Jovi belongs in a dance club like my belongs in a blender.
So what's left San Diego? It seems all the big dance clubs aren't spinning anything close to EDM. I've heard a few things at some of the smaller venues, heard some DnB at C lounge a few sundays ago that was pretty good, though I'm not a terribly big fan of the genre.
Give me your picks and your nights. Please halp! :happy2: |

well i think people from all over the US can agree with you... mash ups have pretty much taken over the whole non-edm market. it's really not the worst thing that could happen, a lot of those DJs really do enjoy house music but know they can't get away with a full night of EDM like giant can so they squeek some stuff in here or there.
regardless, Bands promote albums, DJs promote albums, producers promote tracks. Thats been going on since music became a commericialized industry, most of those guys spend years and years working on these albums, so for you to be upset about them touring it for a year shouldn't be a huge concern considering how much time and energy they invested in it.
on to your question
i know U31 has a Tuesday night Drum & Bass night that i heard goes off
Red Circle was doing Thursday night house sessions(they had deadmau5, quivver, samim etc) but i believe thats over as of next month
Giant - Fridays at 2028, probably the biggest talent SD will ever get
Saturdays -- Thin was doing something for a while but i don't know how consistent it is. |

The Minus 1 lounge @ The Keating plays some nice house music spun by DJ Sem, but the venue itself is very small. The ceiling is like 8ft high, and if you're 6' (like me) tall, it can feel claustrophobic.
On Broadway has a few upcoming events:
Z-Trip (5/9/2008)
John "00" Fleming (5/10/2008)
Kaskade (5/17/2008)
DJ Dan & Donald Glaude (5/23/2008)
Miss Lisa (5/24/2008)
Judge Jules (5/25/2008)
Doc Martin (5/31/2008)
But keep in mind that the headlining DJ's only spin for 90 minutes, and OB promptly shuts down at 1:30am.
2028 is the best bet. Beggars can't be choosers, and I'm just thankful that we at least get some big name DJ's, and now in a venue (mostly) void of the gaslamp scenesters. Things could always be worse and we could have NO edm events at all, like the majority of the country.. |

Upset about them doing promos isn't the right word, just setting up what I am interested in. (I am upset about the ty dance mixes going on downtown tho) It's like when a band goes on tour, but their last album wasn't very good, you know you'll hear most of it that night, so do you go? A lot of the big names have had some very mediocre releases in the last year, I don't need to go through the list, but there are exceptions and I saw or will see them most likely at Giant either in SD or LA. But as far as just awesome tracks back to back in a great mix that aren't just pure promoing stuff, it's just not the same thing.
Thanks for the tips folks, I will check these all out. |

Recording artist/producer vs. DJ, I am sure you know the difference. When he's done promoing Imagine, I'm sure he'll still be a great DJ. I just am not particularly interested in hearing a set that is a 1/3 Imagine, that's all. |

| start listening to house and see house djs and your opinion might change. seems like mainstream trance djs are so full of themselves they play all their own records. |

| san diego has a different take on edm it seems. trance djs dont do as well, but hard electro house seems to go over very well with the downtown sd crowd. if you're into trance then obviously its hard to get your fix in sd, but house has its times and places. coming from a dj standpoint, i would like to play the tracks that ppl in the scene would appreciate, but when you're playing to a crowd that doesnt have an established appreciation for edm, you have to find a middle ground that pleases the crowds as well as shows off you're style of djing. i feel that the best thing to do being out amongst ppl who aren't used to the music is to just dance and look like you're having a blast so that the other ppl see you and think "wow, this music is awesome and i can actually dance to it!" ....either you can bitch about the scene, or you can help build it :D :toothless |
