Recommendations for trance VSTi's

Being short on cash, I want to find ONE VSTi that I can become intimate with inside and out, be a great learning tool, and be applicable for trance, proggy house, and other applications. Any suggestions?

Also, combined with Ableton Live and everything that comes with that, do you feel that gives you enough tools, with 1 DAW and VSTi, to create something of quality? I'm sure the answer is yes, but still curious about opinions.

Cakewalk Rapture

i'd say massive or reaktor

Before buying look into some free vsti's such as synth one. I wish i would have done that because i ended spending 200 dollars without being able to program a synth. Also, try out demos
Waza
yes i would definately say try demo's first as you don't want to be dissapointed when you do get your vst software.

Rob Papen Albino 3. One of the single most greatest VSTs around.

excellent, thanks for the suggestions... any comments tho on using just one vsti? i understand you can certainly get a lot of sounds out of it, but every vsti has their own character and would i be severely limiting myself?

Virus Control - it's pretty expensive and comes with a rather large dongle, but it's worth the money if you can swing it.

If not, any of the synths mentioned so far will do what you're looking for IF you take the time to learn how to program analogue-style synths. That said, Rapture and Massive are two of my personal favorites, but Z3TA+ and Albino 3 are also good and both have built-in arpeggiators, which you may or may not find useful.

Take Waza's advice and start downloading demos.

If you can pay, get Albino 3 or Sylenth-1

If you want free, check out Synth-1 (it's more powerful than you might think), and Helix.

Helix has become my "flavor of the week", it's pretty complicated so if you're new to synthesis maybe its not for you, but if you've worked with synths before and know how to sculpt out your own patches, read the instruction manual and you'll have a beast to play with.

You can find 2 Helix demos in my sound clips folder

PS: I know it looks butt-ugly, but it still packs one hell of a sonic punch :)
