Canadian remix contest

I just put together a small remix contest on my website. It's for "When I Grow Old," a song that I wrote (sung by Mike Allison) which is getting a bit of national radio play on Canadian radio, mostly on adult contemporary and "all genre" radio stations. I'm curious to see what people can do to the vocals in turning it into an electronica-based remix.
I just put the files online a couple days ago, and here's the link:

There's a small cash prize, but only available in certain parts of Canada and the US due to lottery laws.
Let me know if you have any questions or problems downloading the vocal tracks.

No MIDI or tab, sorry. However, I do have chords written out to accompany the lyrics. Hopefully the board doesn't mess up the formatting too badly:
Verse 1/2:
So this is goodbye. You knew that it was coming. F Em
It’s not like I’m running, without warning you at all. Bb F
I said months ago, it’s time that I left here. Dm Am
I got nothing left here, but the writing on the wall. Bb F
I’ve never been a loner, but I’ve always been restless. F Em
You won’t let me forget this, but I’m in no mood to fight. Bb F
Don’t you be sad. I wanna see you smile. Dm Am
I’ll be gone in a while, but I’ll be right here tonight. Bb F
Chorus:
When I grow old, will you still be here? F Em
I’ll show you that I do care, when I finally settle down. Bb F
I don’t know why, you keep telling me it’s not right. F Em
I just want you to stay tonight, won’t you please stay with me now? Bb F
Verse 3:
Been here before, when we were both young kids. F Em
When it didn’t matter what we did, we were so much different then. Bb F
I can’t pretend, that I can see the future. Dm Am
But baby when we’re older, we will be back here again. Bb F
(I think he said “but maybe when” in the last version, & “but baby when” in this version)
Chorus:
When I grow old, will you still be here? F Em
I’ll show you I do care, when I finally settle down. Bb F
I don’t know why, you keep telling me it’s not right. F Em
I just want you to stay tonight. Please stay with me now. Bb F
After pitch rises, the chord progression changes to G, F#m, C repeating. |

Haha, no, but that's a pretty funny comment. But let's not get into politics here, unless it's the politics of dancing ...
This is just a quick reminder that we've got about ten days left in the contest. We've received several great entries, and we're hoping to see a few more before the contest closes. This is a great potential opportunity for a new (or experienced) producer to get your work seen by some world-class DJ's.

All submissions become the property of DJ Bolivia. The respective producers are free to distribute and/or promote their own submissions on other sites and through other forms of media, but DJ Bolivia reserves the right to also distribute and/or promote any or all or no submissions on the DJ Bolivia website and/or Mike Allison's website and/or any forms of reproducable media. In other words, even if you don't win the contest but you do get an honorable mention, we'll probably make your track available as a permanent download from this website.

Yeah, we want to promote the good entries as much as possible, with no restrictions. Since we already hold the copyright to the song itself, it's pretty easy.
This isn't about the money, all works will be redistributed for free. It's all about free publicity for the producers. Mind you, if you're in the production business for the money in the first place, you made a bad career choice. |

Not really. It basically says they can promote your song even if you don't win. Considering that a primary reason people enter remix contests is for additional exposure, I don't see that as a bad thing. Also considering the song is theirs to begin with, they'd already have rights to it if you were promoting it. So what's to lose? |

Not sure if the lyrics or vocal styling would lend well to progressive house or Trance. It has sort of a country or folk feel to it. I think I'll make a go at it, just for the experience. I've only had the chance to do one vocal remix so far, and that was released on Bonzai.
I prefer not having any midis, scores, or chord charts when I do remixes, don't need them. I'm thinking this track would sound best as a straight ahead commercial dance mix. We'll see what happens. Most remix contests that I've seen, don't let you distribute your remix in any form. So that's another plus with this, I can post it on my myspace page or whatever. Well, if I am understanding right. |

| You can definitely promote and distribute your own version of the track in any way you see fit, including web (myspace, website, etc.) or physical distribution, and without limitations. |

Great, even if I don't win, I can show off my work. That's the reason I never enter remix contests, it's a waste of time unless you win. OK, the experience is good I guess, but I personally don't see the point in creating something if I can't share it.
I noticed that the vocals were pitch shifted when mixed into the song. No big deal, I like the pitch of the raw vocals. The vocals work very well for either progressive trance or progressive house. I just hope I can get my remix done before the deadline. Nine days isn't much. I should be able to swing it though. |

Hi, does my remix have to be in the key of 'Aye'?
sorry... i had to :D |

| Nope, not a problem. If you want to pitch-shift, go right ahead. We're being as flexible as possible. I wouldn't be surprised to get a tribal house track that is mostly instrumental with only one sample of one line of the song - we'd still consider that to be a valid entry (although it would probably be best to use a decent portion of the lyrics, if you can). |

Results from the “When I Grow Old” remix contest are online now, at the following link:
http://www.djbolivia.ca/remixcontest.html
A few versions have been posted there already, and some more of the entries will follow on September 1st.
If you like trance, you’ll really enjoy the Zodiacal Light mix (online now) and Prince Avitar’s vocal edit (coming on September 1st).
Club DJ’s should really like Bit Funk’s remix. I’ve already used this particular mix to really rock a dance floor in Las Vegas a few weeks ago.
These tracks are free for anyone to grab, so enjoy …
