| much better !!! signatures should be permanently disabled in my opinion. i suggested a size limitation well over a year ago and only finally has someone done something about it. it is much nicer browsing the boards now that i no longer have to download over 1MB of signatures on my 56 K connection everytime i view a thread. signatures were way too big and they slowed down the forums too much. keep them gone please. |

I disagree with total ban on sigs.
That is one of the things that breaks others apart and I can see who posted where a lot faster with the sigs.
I do agree that the size/format of the sigs do need to be axed.
A 56k Modem however, does not download the same sig over and over again.
Once the file is local to the computer, that's it. (Until the cache is cleared of course).
Then it's just the formatting of the HTML page and extra pictures that a modem connection has to worry about.
I don't believe the issue they're having is an end-user issue.
It's a server bandwidth-cost issue; hence the disappearance of the multiple videos.
I'm not sure what type of connection Swamper has for this board, but I'm sure it's not free and certain comprimises have to be made when dealt a static hand.
This unforunately is the price of a successful website.
I'm sure the debates are long....but the Swamp man will come through! :) |

| i know that various images are stored on my HD for faster loading and construction of web pages. i'm not sure how long the images are saved for but they often have to be redownloaded. this slows down the loading of the forums for me and probably other 56kers, and aslo steals bandwidth from whatever filesharing program i am usin to download e with. it makes it hard to browse the forums while downloading music etc. browsing forums such as "tribe," i don't have this problem because they have totally disabled sigs. as far as discerning between users and their posts: i feel that this job can be done with avatars. most signatures just became annoying and filled up too much of the page. for example, one in particular that stand out was tu_face's sig (no offence tu_face). |

May I suggest a cable modem or dsl prehaps for bandwidth woahs then? ;) (that's a j/k...I'm sure you have...)
It would be interesting to see if Swamper has any statistics regarding the number of different types of connections he gets.
How many people are on 56k that come to the site?
Regardless, the forum was starting to look pretty hacked up with some of those huge useless sigs.
I mean, when it came to reading some of the posts, more than half of the page would be taken up with people's sigs! (like you mentioned and I agree with that 100%)
To me, that's totally useless, visually looks like hell and takes away/distracts from the post.
I'm guessing that the sigs will be no more than 50k in size (or less).
Of course I have no idea how close Swamper is pushing the envelope of his connection or how taxed his server is to say that, but he has to account for future growth and costs.
I wonder if the newer price tiering is going to (or has) effected bandwidth costs for TrancEaddict?
Alas, this could be deemed somewhat personal questions to really get answered, but we can always speculate! :clown:
(Notice I didn't say, "Start rumours" :tongue2 ) |

sigs are annoying when it takes up too much room.
1. listing their favorite tracks or best tunes of the moment in their sigs are useless.
2. requesting tunes. the lists, for some people, are too long. i do admit that i was one of the first people to do this last year but i tried to keep my list to a minimum with the smallest possible font. i stopped doing this for months now.
3. huge ass pictures in the sigs. this must have a limit to size and dimensions. no questions about it. |

| i agree.. some got out of hand but i didn't really care thanks to my trusty cable modem... too bad you're too cheap to get it... hehe.... i always kept my sig small btw... |

| actually cable has NOTHING to do with it. i have cable myself but i still find some sigs annoying because it takes up more space then the actual posts in the thread. |

Sigs will be back soon, swamper is working on some rules for them, sizes, content, 2-way linking from his site to urs and urs to his, and a crop window so if they dont fit, we can resize them (summit like that).
There is an option in ur user area which if u dont like sigs, u can turn them all off, if u do like them, leave it on, everyone is happy then :) |

This is what I would do! One question: If you browse with the Sigs off (where you can't see OTHER'S Sigs), can you still POST a Sig? Anyway, I'm changing my Sig to something more useful (may contact info, like in my e-mail Sig). I think that Sigs should be limited to TEXT ONLY. NO images. These take up too much space on Swamper's side and it take too much time to DL on a SLOW connection like 56K. You don't NEED broadband to surf the 'Net. Why are most people on these forums making Sigs that are SO big that it has to take up more thread space than the information that's in the thread? Swamper, you may want to consider this, along with MAYBE SMALL images (Aviator-sized). This way, Sigs still exist, but, the things that people are complaining about will be gone. |

Hence my < 50 Kb comment for the sigs...
Text signatures are so retro & useless; might as well be off.
I enjoy seeing others' creations and expressions in their picture sig.
I will happily resize (dimension and size) mine to comply... |
