And every time it happens someone is there trying to stop it, or ban an art exhibition because it is "blasphemous".

...the source of most humor?

If I really think about it, it surprises me how many jokes and funny stories revolve around situations where people get hurt, made fun of, or screwed over in some way.

The only kind of jokes that don't seem to do this are puns and absurdist / non-sequitur jokes.

I learned about this in broadway show called "Avenue Q" :)

Schadenfreude

Damn someone beat me to it I just noticed:kadomony errr next post I'll get one good

I already knew the German word, people. I was trying to get a discussion on the idea, not a lesson in vocabulary.

And I tried to keep the discussion going... but I was too sleepy to contribute with anything other than what I remember of Kierkegaard's philosophy of humour :p

I figure if a person who actually suffered the misfortune is able to laugh about it in retrospect, it can be considered funny (think griding a rail gone wrong). But nobody (with any taste) laughs at things such as the holocaust.

Does that mean the holocaust is considered Misfortunes of jews led by Hitler? If that is so who had enjoyment in it? The Nazi's wanted them exterminated and their life would go on. Good thing it was stopped

You dont laught at the holocaust, you laugh at the jokes about the holocaust and to be hones some of those are ing hilarious. Its all about the proper timing anc context. You wouldn't tell a disgusting jew joke when surrounded by jews. No you would tell an equally disgusting joke about Palestinians and all the jews would be cracking up. In the world of humour, everybody's fair game.
