Ahhhhhh pinball. 'Tis the truth that it is a dying game. Arcades in general are practically extinct, and pinball machines were an integral part of it, so together they sink.
I remember reading, back in the 80's, President Reagan I believe tried to make pinball machines illegal because they were too much like gambling. And since there were no age constraints, he thought kids spending their money on it would be a bad influence (remember, this is the same time period when the war on drugs got it's kick into full gear).
I guess it relates to gambling because there are certain, specific opportunities when its impossible to win, like if the ball happens to fall STRAIGHT down to which neither of your flippers can hit it, or when the ball coincidentally bounces off a bumper and goes to one of the sides and you can't get a chance to hit it at all. I think it's stupid to consider the game 'unfair' when that happens, I mean there has to be a way to lose. |

I did not know that. So I'm guessing it was a city code then? People probably just headed to suburban arcade joints in order to get their pinball fix. |

Yeah, city ordinance.
It was considered a game of skill accoridng when it was banned in the 40s. Roger Sharpe (pinball guru) went in front of the NYC City Council and proved that pinball was a game of skill.
