Heart Of Darkness: A literary concept mix (!) [Trance/Prog] (pg. 3)

I'm listening now-sounding good thus far!
Seemed an interesting concept, well done for trying to implement the narrative structure of a story within the confines of a mix. |

mmmmm...oldfield....where did you get Angelique from? what release? i haven't heard a lot of his recent stuff, except Music of the Spheres
btw, he did the same thing w/ "The Songs of Distant Earth" :D |

It's from Light & Shade, although I pitched it down quite severely here so it was at half-tempo to the WOW track, and overlaid some ocean harbour sounds to tie it in with the book. Finding an intro track was the toughest thing- I wanted something that was pleasant, ambient, had the sound of the ocean and only used traditional/conventional instruments all to evoke the opening of the novel. I wanted the serenity of the Thames estuary at the height of colonial power, which would juxtapose with the unsettling and dislocated sound of Intensify.

Well yeah, but that's an album as opposed to a mix. Literary concept albums aren't new- Rick Wakeman did Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Jeff Wayne famously did The War of the Worlds, both in the 70s.
And the trouble with Songs of Distant Earth is that Oldfield could only think of one melody for the whole album. It's a very nice melody, but I got bored of it long before the end. |

as you could probably make out from that link i was a fan of the urban soundtracks hehe :p
i always thought it was a wonderful idea to tell a story through music and although i don't really think oakie did that great a job at it (too much promotion of his style if you ask me), i'm interested to check out your interpretation...
i used to have all the urban soundtracks...i wonder if they are still laying around on disc somewhere...:conf: |

You should try reading James Joyce. Finnegan's Wake is nearly impossible to understand without simultaneously reading a guide to it.
