if it melted then there was an internal short.
not all batteries that cannot hold a charge have an internal short. most of the time its just an old battery. i have a really really old p3 ibm thinkpad and the battery lasts about 2 minutes so i always have to have it plugged in. its been that way for about 5 years. |

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm - scroll down to "Simple Guidelines" - he says keep 'em charged up, drain fully every 30 times or so (once a month?), long-term storage at 40% charge.
I do this, basically I keep my 3 year old laptop plugged in most of the time, I still get 2 - 3 hours when on batteries (got 4 when it was new).
Same rules for cellphones. |

had that on my old HP
the secret is to keep the battery out of the laptop if you keep it plugged in (i do, i used it a stationary machine so the only time I need batter life is when we have a blackout)
get a new battery and move on :P |

how is it strange? it could be wired so that an inserted battery completes a closed circuit. open circuit = no power. |

| It's because Acer manufactures junk. |

| lol. my batter last so little that sometimes I don't have enough juice to even power up the computer and have all the stuff load before it goes to sleep. |
