Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the anthem for the Champions League is the gayest thing you'll ever hear. if you close your eyes you can swear you're hearing the anthem to sensation white and not to a football tournament.

:haha:

I always thought it was weird that they make the players stand on the pitch and they have to act like its a normal national anthem. lammme

I see no problem with how the champions league is set up now

The difference is the Champions League is broadcasted on ESPN and ESPN Deportes while UEFA Cup is broadcasted on Fox Sports and Fox Sports en español.

That doesn't make any sense. The Champions League would be what...5, 6 teams? That would be incredibly boring. Adversely, is it fair to deny Chelsea a spot in the Champions League because they're TWO points away from Man United?

No, 40+ teams, UEFA has over 40 countries. The Champions League (called "Champions Cup" at the time) used to be like this until the early 90s actually - only the champion from each country qualified, and the others went to UEFA Cup.

But I don't agree that the cup should come back to those days, I think this format is much more entertaining. For some reason people get really annoyed with calling it "Champions League", so change the name of the competition and everyone should stfu.

Well that's the whole platform Platini was running on when he became President of UEFA, to reduce the number of teams coming from the bigger leagues in Europe to allow more room for actual 'champions' to make it to group stage, etc.

Who knows, we could see some changes in the future, but seeing how bureaucratic the process can be (e.g. we have to wait until 2010 until for the Champions League Final to be held on a weekend, even though the change was made in 2007), it may take some time until it's fully approved.

problem is, platini and blatter (uefa & fifa bosses) are both jerks, with no actual interest in what people want, just their own agendas. Sure, making less teams from england, spain & italy will allow the champions of lesser footballing nations to make the group stage, but we've already seen what happens to those kind of teams, they get hammered, Arsenal 7-0 Sparta Prague (who are by no means the worst of the european champions to get in, imagine san marino, faroes etc)

and if they had any guts, they'd rename it back to what it used to be: European Cup.

That song has been played to death. I'm so sick of hearing it :whip:

I don't mind the tune. But is quite funny how the Champions League Final is between two English teams and a Scottish one is in the UEFA Cup Final meaning 3 of the 4 teams in the finals are British. :p

The_G0dfather
also funny how neither of them will attend the EC

The song still gives me goosebumps (after watching 10 years of Champions League this year), but especially before really big games. Makes me feel like I can conquer the world or something.

And yes, British (English really, but anyway) dominance is undisputed in Europe right now. It's a constant ebb and flow between Spain (Real Madrid Vs. Valencia in the 1999/2000 finals), Italy (Milan Vs. Juventus in the 2002/2003 finals), and sometimes Germany (Bayern Munich and Bayer Lervekusen in 2000/2001 and 2001/2002, respectively), but this will now be 5 English teams in the past 4 finals.
