My mom and I had planned a trip to visit Chengdu to volunteer at the panda reserves for a few days this week. I'm really glad we decided to postpone it.

So far there has been no word from the reserves....I hope everything is alright there with the fuzzy ones and their caretakers. It's the last Giant Panda reserve in the world :(

What do you guys think of the recent natural disasters that seem to have increasingly occured over the past year or two in our world??

Myanmar's massive cyclone killing 100,000+
Yesterday's China Earthquake killing several thousands
Huge mud slides somewhere else in Asia
Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans
Massive Tsunami in 2004 in Asia after Christmas
Very frequent storm/tornado killings in southern USA in the past year

These are pretty high scale disasters involving the loss of many many people and I just had the thought that these are occuring at an increased rate than I've ever seen before. It seems as if as soon as one disaster occurs and gets documented, another one just hits.

Is the world coming to a slow end????? :sadgreen:

No. The real answer is that we now have 24 hour news channels looking for more material. In the past, a 100,000 person death cyclone in burma would have been a 30 second newsclip on the 6 oclock news.

This will probably be the only post I make in this thread b/c I don't feel like getting into a global warming argument....but global warming has increased the likelihood of these natural disasters happening, as well as the intensity of the disasters.

So our cold winter this year? Is that a sign of the next ice age?

Oh wait... single weather events like a cold winter arent not an indication of proof of global warming unless of course, it's in the interest of those who say it exists. Like say, Hurricane Katrina. I get it now :)

Naw man, it's totally true. Meteors are attracted to warm planets. The more global warming we make, the more we'll attract the meteors flying around in space.

Global warming scares are all about another kind of green..

$$$$$$$$$$$

Just look at the goracle. Hes coming out with incovenient truth part 2. If this really were about awareness and not making money he wouldnt be charging $50 per CD for part 2 now would he?

Not to mention the carbon footprint hes leaving gallavanting around the world to speak at half a million dollars a pop!

He's just one example.

Anyone who buys into this hype and especially this carbon offsetting BS is fooling themselves.

If anyone here wishes to donate to carbon offsetting please send me $300 and ill plant a tree for you. Seriously! Then you can sleep better at night and people like me will take care of the green :) haha

The internet.... is there anything it can't do?

None of this exited the way it is now before the internet. The internet made news interesting. Very few young adults read a paper from front to back, but the internet made it so easy for anyone to read up on current events, read stories and see images and video never broadcasted on local TV, let alone be flooded with propaganda and conspiracy theories left to be discussed on various message boards such as this one.

It wasn't at all like this 15 years ago (BBS's excluded).

You're right just like the sub prime mortgage crisis....

Global Warming Global Warming, the thing is CO2 doesn't affect the temperature. The temperature affects the levels of CO2.

I must say that this post is the one that has striken me with the most meaning in this thread (at least, up till this post - haven't finished reading all of the discussion yet). I still think it's pretty sad and quite tragic though. I think that the scary thing is how an event like this can happen so unexpectadly and literally "out of the blue"... we think that we as humanity are so technologically advanced but at certain times, it's still to no avail... nature has the upper hand on us.
