ROGERS CABLE, what a bunch of Panzy's

From a Toronto Star article that I'm assuming some of you know about already, however I just found out and thought I'd spread the word:

Rogers to offer multi-tier Internet
'Byte caps' to be in place this summer
Rachel Ross
Technology Reporter
Unlimited high-speed Internet access may be a thing of the past.

Following Bell Canada's lead, Rogers Cable Inc. plans to charge their Internet customers based on the amount of data they download and upload.

Alek Krstajic, Rogers' senior vice-president of sales and marketing, said he expects to introduce bandwidth limits, or "byte caps", this summer.

"What we're looking to do is to use the byte cap to modify the behaviour of that upper few per cent that are really using a lot of bandwidth," said Krstajic.

He said such limits are necessary "to give a fair service to the vast majority of customers" by stopping a small percentage of people who "hog" all of the bandwidth. He said the new packages would be similar to those offered by Bell.

Bell Canada's new three-tiered system was officially announced earlier this week. Bell's standard high-speed service will remain, but the company will also offer a "basic" and "ultra" package starting next month. Sympatico's basic service, to cost $29.95 a month, will allow for a maximum of one gigabyte each for uploaded and downloaded content.

For $69.99, users can sign up for Sympatico ultra, which has download speeds of up to 3 megabits (3 million bits of data) per second and upload rates of 640 kilobits per second. Ultra users will have a 10-gigabyte cap each on uploads and downloads.

If customers exceed their limit, they'll be charged an extra 79 cents per 100 megabytes of data.

Krstajic wouldn't give specific prices for Rogers' proposed packages, but he did say that Rogers' equivalent to Bell's ultra package might be priced slightly lower, "between $59.95 and $69.95."

Darryl Burke, a Rogers customer from Newmarket, is concerned there won't be any way to contest his bill if the company charges him for downloads he doesn't think he's made.

"If I disagree with their charges at the end of the month, it would be very hard to show that I didn't generate the traffic," said Burke.

Burke said that once downloads and uploads are monitored, people will be surprised at the traffic generated by programs that automatically retrieve their own upgrades.

Burke isn't alone in his concern about limiting downloads. More than 3,200 people signed an online petition that opposes the limits.

What a bunch of Panzy's

Yea, this has been known (at least I knew) for quite a while. I'm pretty sure Swamper posted something a while back regarding this too.

My big beef is what program can I use to monitor my bandwidth that Roger's will officially recognize if I have a dispute regarding my bandwidth usage?

Am I just supposed to take their word for it? Right...
Juricimo
too bad for you guys in Canada....i havent heard of anything like this happening in the US yet...lets hope not...

Honestly, I plan on changing my provider.
Maybe a small outfit somewhere around town who have unlimited usage and so on.

I can't afford a cap, hell I download almost 5 gigs worth of movies a month, non the less all the upload bandwidth hosting i do with games like Urban Operations etc...
I'd be raped if I decided to stick with Rogers, I think there a bunch of panzy's anyhow. They stated in that article that they want to be, so called "fair to everyone" and not have a bundle of us hog the bandwidth, well , if those people arnt using the high bandwidth in the first place, then why does it matter, it doesn't, they just want to make more money and save bandwidth at the same time. Panzy's I tell ya.

And you think you have it tough?

Here is Australia, the main cable internet provider (the other one is unavailable to certain areas - including mine) has introduced a 3gb upload/download cap, and then charge something crazy like $1 for every megabyte downloaded after that.

Plus, they are slower and more expensive than the other company that offers caps of 7gb / fortnight.

So don't go whinge about it. I could be a lot worse.

Damn Renegade, I think you need to move your ass here to Canada.
Honestly, to each there own right, every part of the world has it ups and downs, fortunetaly, internet access around here is easy to find, so were used to it. So yes, I hear where your coming from, but I have a right to bitch, and not look at it like others have it worse, hehehe, no offence of course :)

Anyhow, start packin ;)

what does telus have? I wan't to switch from rogers........
FASTDJMP3
here in montreal i have videotron , no cap no and it's friggin fast (better than sympatico)
apri_peel
telus is the equivalent of bell on the west coast
videotron is the equivalent of rogers and shaw in quebec
as opposed to sympatico, telus doesnt have any caps (yet). they provide the exact same service as shaw (or rogers) for the exact same price. not much of a difference except that its an adsl service

Hey Apri :)
Nice to see you kickin on the TA board ;)

I'm really pissed at this big change, not looking forward to changing to a provider who won't have speeds as nice as Rogers Cable does :(

Have a good weekend :D

hows it going cluster

who is the adsl provider in ontario?
in BC our adsl and cable have same speeds and they give you same deals, for the same price. so if shaw/rogers do decide to do something, i know i'll just switch to adsl (and get a free month, save $40 :happy2: )

some private companies are starting to offer adsl but the ones that i looked into have caps altho their prices are lower
