forged alliance is chess with thousands of individual units shooting the out of each other with simulated ballistics. i can understand why it isn't your thing, but don't lie to the children that "it sucks". for those willing to learn the game, other rts titles become childish in comparison.
Supreme ruler 2020 also may be a good war game as it seems very indepth and should run on any PC, no graphic masterpiece though

Both of those games are RTS that you really have to be careful about selling as the be all and end all of RTS games. Mainly because they are quite tough to get into and can get quite frustrating.
Both really good games but not for everyone. Sometimes you just want to build and blow up without needing to learn everything about the game.
With that being said though, I support Worms. God damn that game is fun, even though it's got nothing to do with RTS :p

i'd also like to say that i think that forged alliance is the be-all and end-all of RTS gaming as at may 2008.
i am curious about starcraft 2 though.

Indeed. Not much in common... except for both having great story (they screwed over the story with having undead on horde side and stuff though... lets not forget the playable space faring purple octopie)
