Smart Growth in Atlanta!

A great (national) article on the ways Atlanta is looking to control it's growth in the future. It highlights things like Southface, The Beltline, the Piedmont expansion, and Atlantic Station. While the Beltline and Atlantic Station are still highly debatable in terms of "smart growth," it's great to see Atlanta getting some national attention for the investments it's making to reduce the sprawl.

Anywhere they build, someone will get shot.

True, I was thinking the thing they left out of that article was how to cut the EXTREME crazy poverished people downtown from the public. It scares people off, including me sometimes. I don't mean "wipe them", but just somehow keep control of the city so that you don't get 15 people hassling you every mile.

If you click on "11x17" Version of Concept 3 Map" you can see one of the plans that the transit board is working on right now.

Very interesting. :)

it's not that bad, i'm originally from cleveland and i think my mom said the shootings last year for the metro cleveland area were equal to like half the population of the city of atlanta (not metro area). although the new law being able to carry firearms on marta and whatnot might change that.

anyone who has rode marta knows there's some serious nutjobs and the last thing that needs to go through your head is that they can legally carry a firearm. makes me want to go buy one too just to make things even

I hope the new MARTA will rise my property value :) it's about time.

What's the new MARTA? they definitely need to improve on alot, MARTA's the worst rapid transit I've ever used but it's all we have down here. I know the RTA in Cleveland and the BART in San Francisco (where my wife's from) make MARTA seem incompetent. I hope they are able to up the ante on MARTA, but the horrendous street/grid layout of Atlanta has alot to do with MARTA sucking too.

There will be an extension of the north line from North Springs all the way to exit 11 (Windward Parkway in Alpharetta) of 400. I complete agree with the uselessness of MARTA. In it's defense it is hard and expensive to create an extensive mass transit system for such a sprawling city.

After the additional lane opened up it is not as bad as it use to be. From Exit 10, it takes me 45 minutes to 50 minutes to get to Buckhead on a normal day. Now that school is out, it takes me 30 to 35. People coming from western and eastern Atlanta have it much worse.
