Although he disappointed me and pissed off pretty badly with Walls, I simply can't hate this guy. He is (or was, I really don't know anymore) too awesome. I've always compared him to Chris Clark, not because they are musically similar, but because they started around the same time and because they are, in my opinion, two most serious post-2000 IDM producers out there. And while Chris immediately started to chase the standards Autechre set with Confield, Sascha settled down on his debut Multifunktionsebene with his own ambient oriented, not too dynamic, semi-complex sound. Hovewer, on his second album (or EP, since it's only 30 minutes long) Tttrial And Eror he started to experiment a lot more (very smart move) and the result came off pretty Autechreish. Year later, on Duplex, he basically combined the atmosphere of the first album and complexity of the second, and what to say, the result is again great. Fantastic multi-layered, crispy and at times even tear-inducing album.
Now, three very solid albums in three years and the man is on top. In the meantime he releases a couple of interesting, but not very groundbreaking singles and everyone is just waiting for a new album. And then comes Walls...
Eh, what to say? Maybe someone even likes it, but I think it's horrible. Especially when you consider it's from a guy who made 3 above mentioned masterpieces. Slow, static, too much vocals, too much of pseudo-complex programming, tiring melodies - all in all not exciting at all. And not to mention that the experimentation is gone. The only track that sounds like early Apparat is Fractales (Part I). And that's definitely not enough...
So, for me, it goes something like this:
Tttrial And Eror
Multifunktionsebene
Duplex

"Walls" is absolutely great from a more "indie/post-rock standpoint" (rather than an IDM one) and for this reason i consider it his BEST album. Melodic brilliance. |
