Was this a seriously the level??? It got me investigating (info below-dated 2002)....... Any of you who have been DJing/clubbing for a long time noticing effects (tinnitus, hearing loss, etc.)? I remember one time I saw Digweed and my left ear rang for ~month.....freaked me out (granted it was my fault for not wearing ear plugs). I know this has been discussed elsewhere, but a few links for good earplugs? Thanks!

Decibel Exposure Time Guidelines
Accepted standards for recommended permissible exposure time for continuous time weighted average noise, according to NIOSH and CDC, 2002. For every 3 dBs over 85dB, the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur is cut in half.
Continuous dB Permissible Exposure Time
85 db 8 hours
88 dB 4 hours
91 db 2 hours
94 db 1 hour
97 db 30 minutes
100 db 15 minutes
103 db 7.5 minutes
106 dB 3.75 min (< 4min)
109 dB 1.875 min (< 2min)
112 dB .9375 min (~1 min)
115 dB .46875 min (~30 sec)

.
124.6 dB

seriously tho, I know I've definitely lost some hearing over the past few years. I started wearing earplugs I think in early-mid 2007. They have helped immensely I think and at this point I feel naked at any place with loud music, without them. I have been exposed to loud music for many many years now, even prior to my regular clubbing (which only started in late 2006). Mainly from concerts - definitely lots of ringing ears. Sadly if you like music and making music and listening to music, there's not really anything you can do about it. Within reason, music is best experienced at loud volume. On a good system, of course. But listening at low safe-for-ears volume, no, that doesn't do much for me. Oh well.

I can still hear pretty well so I guess I'm glad for that. But I do notice nowadays, if I hear certain high frequencies (in everyday life) it almost hurts my ears with a piercing, stinging sensation. Quite unpleasant. I mean sounds such as the creak of a rusty lock on a gate when you are twisting it, or certain high-pitched and loud sounds trains make, and others.

quote:
Prevention
Tinnitus and hearing loss can be permanent conditions, thus, precautionary measures are advisable. If a ringing in the ears is audible after exposure to a loud environment, such as a rock concert or a work place, it means that damage has been done. Prolonged exposure to noise levels as low as 70 dB can result in damage to hearing (see noise health effects). For musicians and DJs, special musicians' earplugs can lower the volume of the music without distorting the sound and can prevent tinnitus from developing in later years.

was probably SPLs (sound pressure levels) not db

theres quite a difference, and local laws/ordinances usually go by SPLs.

Amen. I really don't understand the "crank it up to 11" mentality.
