Has PC gaming really come to giving away games for free? I see these free game deals every so often for the PC, especially recently.

Surely they aren't games worth playing when there are better experiences out there to spend time on, but still, this doesn't help out developers of PC games who aim to sell their games. They are already fighting for a very small market, and then they have Steam pushing forward the death of PC gaming by giving away games.

PC Gaming platform is poorly managed. =/
Even I could manage a better platform, add a couple billion dollars in revenue with a few changes.

Well actually I do, I study the PC and Console markets, its part of what I do for a living. And if I was managing the PC platform, I would make changes that would allow it to compete with Consoles. Giving away Free games is one of the things I would not do. Especially when there is already easy access to free games through warez, giving them away through Steam only cuts into potential revenue from the people who actually do buy the games, which is a small market compared to Console gaming market.

These are older games.. I'm willing to bet they sell less than five copies a week...so why not give them away for free as a promotion to introduce players to Steam? Steam has it's own little advertisements that pop up every day, introducing players to new games. They will probably end up making alot of money by giving away a few small freebies.

Honestly man, considering your above comments I'm actually really surprised to hear you say that you study the PC and console markets for a living. I don't know what you do exactly, I'm actualy very interested in hearing it, if you're willing to share.

But, there are a couple of points above (I did not bother quoting your next post, as that is off base by a bit as well) that you really miss by quite a margin.

1)Giving away free games has been a staple of the PC industry, but is not representative of the industry. Actually, it is something that is completely up to the publisher, and there are some that even since the good old DOS days give away free games after a given period of time. Further, again casting question as to what you actually do for a living, you would be good to realize that ALL of the games listed are akin to console demos. Not a one is a full-release game, but merely a taste of what the full gaming experience has to offer. Lately with multiplayer becomming a huge selling point, Valve has made a rather good decision to show people what its frontier engine is capable of in a multiplayer context. You may see it as a desparate move, but considering PC gaming for the last, oh say 20 years, this is nothing new.

2) Worthwhile gaming experiences. Again, this really casts doubt on your position in the gaming industry. Assessing pie charts, or dare i say it, loading crates, IMO, does not give you a good fundamental understanding of what is actually happening. All of the games, again, listed above are 'extensions' to some of the most popular PC games of the last 5 years; the Half-Life series, and FEAR, BOTH of which have seen extensive ports to consoles. These games have been continued successes, both from an innovation and gameplay perspective, as well as from a sales perspective.

3)Re: PC gaming poorly managed. You continually refer in your posts to PC gaming with the same contextual phrases as you do for console gaming. It is a fundamental understanding of ANYONE in the gaming industry that the two are TOTALLY separate beasts, and can not be compared on any level, simply of the background infrastructure they are based on. If you were to manage it? I'm sorry, but do you not realize the comletely decentralized nature of the PC gaming world? This is a direct correlation to the historical development of the PC platform, from the very early days. If you had any solid grasp of this concept, you would realize that 'managing' this is incomparable on any level. If you try to argue that it should be different, you clearly demonstate a total lack of understanding for the structure of the PC world at large.

You may use this as a fairly moot argument to the detriment of the PC gaming industry, but that is like saying that we are all undoubtedly doomed because I drive a V6 instead of an I4.

Beautiful.

And exactly what I would've said except I won't waste time with lionslair. I especially loved your crack about him lugging crates around haha. And yes, there's no way in hell that lionslair studies the industry as "part of his job", because its clear he doesn't understand the first thing about it.
