I need some genre definitions and examples

These are the ones I couldn't give someone else a clear definition of, although I have an idea enough to name a couple of song examples...

1. Acid or acid house
2. goa
3. goa trance
4. psy trance

I've heard infected mushroom fits into psy trance, in which case I have a good idea about what it is, but basically, give me some painfully standard examples of these genres...
KilldaDJ
astral projection is goa i think

Goa is a place in India where Trance was originally played in parties... That's how Goa Trance got it's name as it is quite like those Trance tracks played back then and there...

You will find no definitive differences in sound and definition between Goa and Psy Trance...

Some reffer to Psy as the newer, Melodier, using-less-samples tracks but generally they are the same...

Acid House really isn't my genre but I'm assuming it's House with lots of TB303 use?
Maxim303
acid is indeed music loaded with 303s, and it's one of my faves :) (hence my name, Maxim303 ...)
some good examples of this kind of music are ASYS, DJ Misjah, Hardfloor, Spacegirl, Solar Quest, early Josh Wink, Junk Project, etc.. a lot of the "acid" elements are also used in goa.
(btw, look on audiogalaxy for Maxim303 or dj maxim for my own original acid tunes :))

but goa is not the same thing as psytrance, in fact, they're pretty different beasts altogether.

goa has a lot of crazy, cerebral melodies that take you to the stars. while psytrance is just as psychedelic, it is more minimal and relies more on "phat" sounds and noises rather than melodies.
goa is huge in israel, and most of the top producers are from there. check out infected mushroom, astral projection, mfg, shiva shidapo (all israeli) as well as hallucinogen, man with no name, gms, green nuns of the revolution, etnica, pleiadians, doof, cosmosis, deedrah, electric universe, dj jorg, oforia, xerox and (early) yahel for some excellent and quintessential goa tunes.

psytrance is really big in scandanavia, although isreal and other parts of the world are catching on. it's harder to get into psytrance than goa (same analogy as trance vs. progressive, you can think of psytrance as the progressive side of goa). some top artists in that area include x-dream, the delta, hux-flux, atmos, logic bomb, (newer) talamasca, planet b.e.n., midi miliz, as well as the whole "3D vision" label.

check www.psynews.org for more info on goa and psytrance.

hope the above list of artists will keep you busy on audiogalaxy :)

For very good info about Acid you should ask USSR Junkie. He's a specialist in this genre. I think he may post a reply very soon. Otherwise ask him.

Maxim: Altho I have heard many people make the same argument that you do concerning Goa and Psy, I don't think it's as clear cut as that. Not everyone in the Psychedelic Trance world shares your opinion on classifications. Many people are now trying to phase out the term Goa Trance (since it has less and less to do with the place named Goa in India) and calling it ALL Psychedelic Trance or Psy Trance for short, which makes much more sense to me. I prefer to distinguish the different styles of Psy Trance by calling the melody rich faster high energy stuff as "Full-On" and the slower melody-less stuff as "Progressive" or "Minimal".

In the end it's all just trance... All these classifications of sub-genres and sub-sub-genres just drives people crazy and it isn't worth the time arguing it cuz everyone has a different definitions.

"Full-On" Psy Trance Recommendations:

Talamasca - Come On
Infernal Machine - The Loin Sleeps Tonight
Sun Project - 380 Volts

Anything by Pleiadians - tracks like Jungle Trax, Maia, Taygeta, Alcyone, Asterope.

I don't listen to enough Progressive/Minimal Psy Trance to make any good recommendations, at least not off the top of my head.

Acid itself is not a genre. It stands for excessive use of Roland TB 303 in its various modes.

There are currently 5 distinguishable acid genres: Acid House, Acid Trance, Acid Techno, Acidcore, and Acid Breaks

Acid House

Papa of all acid sounds... was born in the end of the 80s of the last century and was extremely popular in the beginning of the 90s. Currently is considered DEAD. Who invented acid house? Well, opinions are different actually. I would say either FUTURE or DJ PIERRE who actually was the first one to ever turn the knobs of the box and thus, change the tone of the bassline.

Acid Trance

... is still alive but has changed over the time.

Two subgenres - Old Skool and Nu Skool

-Old Skool is DEAD. It is stuff formely made by Acid Junkies, Hardfloor, AWeX, and Acrid Abeyance.

Property? It is very melodic...

Good Examples:

Urhirn - The First 303 (Old Skool Mix)
Kenton Connection - Touch Me
Hardfloor - Alternative
Hardfloor - the last marshmellow machine
Acrid Abeyance - 303 in Love
Acrid Abeyance - Tranquil
Overrider - Time Bomb
Pergon - The Deliverer
Kid Acid - Notatorious
Future Breeze - Heulender Wolf
anything by Acid Junkies
etc...

-Nu Skool is much more agressive and harder. People often refer to it as HARD ACID TRANCE

Examples:

Mikerobenics - Replica (Never Stop to Eat)
Acut Genius - Formic Acid
Cosmic Commando - Acid Overdose
Rubicon Massacre Ltd - The Lash v.1.1
Woody McBride - The Birdman
Never - Hellbent
Adelong - Goldfieber
Midigewitter - Beat Time
A.S.Y.S. - Acid Train
DJ Misjah & DJ Tim - Access
Racoon - What to Be (Jon the Dentist Remix)
etc...

Acid Techno

... is also alive and has the same subgenres...

-Old Skool

It's active but at the same time gradually ousted by the nu skool

THE MOST ACIDIC OF ALL ACID GENRES (this is mah choice :D:D:D). Was brought to the world by the "avin it ere" crew from England (Liberator DJs, Guy McAffer, Roland Peel, Lawrie Immersion, Henry Cullen, D. Lalouche, Mark Tyler)

Good Examples:

Lochi - New Wave of Acid Techno
Lochi - in Avin It Ere
Dynamo City - Shape Shift
Lawrie Immersion & Dirtbag - Acid Techno
Liberator DJs - Radio on One
Audio Pancake - Goa
Tarball & Lungbutter - Midsweep Monofest
Lochi - Vote Techno Party
etc...

-Nu Skool

It is what the most part of London techno underground listens to, now. Much less acidic, the biggest accent is made on different percussions and special TECHNO effects rather than on acid bassline

Good Examples:

Audio Pancake - Soul Suckin
Android - Starchild
The Geezer - You've Just ed Up
The Geezer - Brainbend
Speaker Pimps - Casing the Joint
The Undertakers - Rigamortis Has Set In
Trapeze Artists - General Narcotic
Cosmic Trigger - E-Spot (The Weathermen Remix)
etc...

Acidcore

hardcore with agressive acid lines (still active today):

Good Examples:

Mike Dearborn - Raw Acid
Choose - Reflected Life (+ anything else made by him)
Zekt - The Last Dawn
Machines - Acid Storm
Woody McBride - When Good Times Turn Sour
ABC of Acid - Little Boy Drummer
DJ Misjah vs. DJ Jean Pierre - Temple of Acid
Chris Liberator - Fat Lines (Chris Liberator Remix)
Khaza the Bass - Trouble Room (Amino Acid Mix)
Pete Skank - Stay in Bed Forever
Pete Skank - The Future's dark, the Future's acid
Da Predator & Wedlock - Get On Down
Gamble 202 - Blue Index
etc...

Wanna know the names of the hardest acidcore labels? PM me then :D ;)

Acid Breaks

Dunno who started it all... but it's still pretty popular nowadays (ESPECIALLY in the USA)

Good Examlpes:

Super Skunk - Move That
Cascade - Art of Choice
DJ Micro - Acid or XTC
Hash Den - Orbit Aurora
Chernobyl - Ambush on Wax
Trip Massive - Manic Acid
Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness
Ages of Empire - Stone Age
Spin Cycle - Trip Yo Mind
DJ Liquidity - It's Gonna Be Alright
etc...

you're right about phasing out the term "goa", however, it's still right on the dot when describing tunes from the "golden age" of goa trance (94-98), and now similiar kind of productions are indeed "full on", but i believe the is a pretty big destinction between goa (full on) and psytrance. you probably wouldn't put astral projection and x-dream in the same sentence. ap is al about melody, while x-dream don't know the meaning of the word (which is not nessecerily(sp?) bad, mind you). what you call progressive and minimal is indeed what most psytrance is (except i beg to differ about it being slow...check x-dream's "telegram"..hehe)..

but in the end, it's all a matter of opinion, and as long as it goes down well with dr. hofmann's medecine, it's all right with me :)
