Daft Punk's first and subsequent full length albums were released on Virgin, a major mainstream label, and received mainstream recognition. This is nothing new for them. However, this really doesn't need to be pointed out because your argument is completely irrelevant to begin with. Merely achieving mainstream popularity is not reason enough to hold anything against an artist/band. Had they done something weak just to bolster their popularity (aka selling out) then you'd have a legitimate complaint, but they haven't. Some people might consider their endorsement of Kanye's sampled track as an act of selling out, but I think it would be pretty damn hypocritical of Daft Punk not to endorse proper sampling of their original works, given that they freely sample themselves. I can sort of see their appearance on the Grammy's with Kanye as a popularity stunt, or maybe that Gap commercial they did back in the day... but the line between "promoting" and "selling out" is often pretty subjective. But honestly, those instances are relatively insignificant compared to their entire career.

I'm not singling you out personally, but I saw this quote and it made me think. There is so much hate for mainstream djs on this forum it's crazy. But a group like Daft Punk goes mainstream, does commercials, and plays with Kanye West and people are defending them. If Tiesto pulled that and did a song with Kanye, there would be outrage. I just see a double standard here. Evidently PVD, Tiesto, Armin have all sold out, but a group that does stuff with Kanye is just "promoting" themselves. Maybe someone could explain to me how that works. Honestly, I'm not that big into Daft Punk to begin with, but the fact that the same people who flame tiesto for becoming too big are defending people like Daft Punk for the same thing is mindboggling.

Perhaps it is because Tiesto or PvD don't have 1% of the talent of DP. They have never made a Homework or a Discovery.

Daft Punk has been noticed in the EDM community far more for their productions, and not really how they measure up in the DJ Booth.

Most of the Tiesto & PVD flaming comes from DJ'ing & also from generic productions.

Before DP's last tour, there was only a couple live sets from them recorded and they were all dated around the turn of the century (1997-2001). I must say though, Daft Punk (More specifically Guy-Manuel, Thomas isn't a DJ) is actually quite talented at DJ'ing & his performance for each Essential Mix were stellar.

There's a clear difference that you missed, though. Most people who accuse PvD and others of "selling out" think that they made and spun sub-par, cheesy tracks for the purpose of becoming popular.

So the process goes like this:

"Big DJs": Made decent stuff -> Made cheesy / watered down stuff -> Got popular

Daft Punk: Made good stuff -> Made more good stuff -> Got popular

Lots of people have a problem with the first, but very few people have a problem with the second.

Because honestly, Tiesto, Armin, PvD their ilk are somehow soaking up popularity without actually doing anything interesting. Neither of them are actually making good music these days (PvD did once a long long long time ago, but that's ancient history now), and their DJ performances usually overbloated spectacles. For s sake, whenever Tiesto or Armin does a 8-10 hour solo set they are pretty much incapable of doing it without lights, pyrotechnics, videos, lip synching singers, and other gimmicks that are really ing stupid and unnecessary, because if you strip them all away all you have is a really mediocre trance set. Then you have guys like Danny Howells who do 8-10 hour sets all the time in regular clubs and manage to completely tear the walls down without the need for dumb props or $70 tickets. THOSE are the DJs who should be #1 on that stupid poll.

Daft Punk, on the other hand, has put out 3 good albums (2 of which are pretty much timeless masterpieces and the third being just solid), had two amazing tours that each have spawned excellent live albums (Alive 1997 and 2007), have produced 2 full length films, and they have done this while remaining true to their own artistic vision. I honestly think that if the mainstream shunned DP tomorrow, they would just shrug their shoulders and continue to do their thing in obscurity, and that if the same thing were to happen to a big trance DJ, they would be fighting tooth and nail to claw their way back up.

Didn't Thomas play a couple of sets in paris a couple of years ago, and at wmc back in 2002? Where they all live sets?

edit:

yes he is :D

When I said DJ I meant that in the 2 Turntables + Mixer style. I know he's been doing shows in Paris with a laptop + midi controller for a while. I didn't watch either video you posted, so if that's the type of setup he's used in the past, I'll put my foot in my mouth. I'll quote from another message board however:

"when daft punk do a mix it is actually only guy-manuel on the turntables...thomas is actually not so good at DJing.

Dissera (a friend of mine from france) said one time guy man wasnt feeling well at a show so thomas had to go out and DJ alone...he didnt even know what he was doing...phillipe zdar of cassius had to go up there and help him thru it. She said it was on of the worst shows she had ever seen."

Really? I had no idea, cool fun fact. He's actually playing records in those two videos though. I knew he did live sets but I though he had a couple of dj sets back in the day as well.

I wish I could actually get a hold on more of their older sets.:(

Random factoid:

I heard that Daft Punk was DJing at a party the night that France won the World Cup in '98. I can only imagine how ing off the chain that party was :eyespop:

Well, perhaps that happened to Thomas back in like '97 or '98. So perhaps after the poor performance he decided to pick up DJ'ing. He could've became pretty good in a couple years time (especially if he became devoted to it and practiced daily).
