Mathias Matthew - Josser (Summer 2008 Mix) (pg. 2)

Been debating how to review this one for a while because every time I come up with a description I think to myself "That sounds absolutely ludicrous and no one is going to agree with it."

Taking that into consideration, I also can't come up with any better analogies, so these are going to have to do.

This is a techno set, it isn't tech house, it isn't prog, it's straight up techno spun by a kid who works harder behind the decks than almost any other live DJ I have ever seen (sans maybe Ben Sims), anyone who has seen Mathias play can attest to that.

That being said, I would describe this set as containing three parts, one that feels like tech house, one that feels like proper "minimal" techno (at least as it's understood these days) that has some eerily prog elements in it, and a "new" techno section. Each is very distinct, and the way each is moved between works very, very well.

A prime example of the first idea I was trying to get at is "Hispaniola" - the bubbly bassline is really indicative of the kind of laid back groove the first half has, the kind of stuff I want to hear at sunset when I'm relaxing with a drink. By around the Houle tune (which is very much "in the mix"), we're clearly into a bit drummier, yet stripped down minimal techno section that is more about quick transitions and flow between small parts of tunes than tunes on the whole, by the time you hit Brian Kage through "Maria" you've got basically a full on, lush, proggy feeling techno going on and everything feels like it just built from point A to point B perfectly.

All in all, the set is nothing but techno, and nothing if not a perfect representation of Mathias abilities and range as a live DJ. There's a reason I've tried to learn all I can from this kid, and it's a ing crying shame he isn't playing the time slots he should be.

It should play seamlessly on any MP3 player and burn seamlessly to a CD in any burning program provided you put the tracks in the right order.

Honestly I really don’t know what to say other then thank you. What you described is the exact vision that I had in mind. The different parts of the set and how everything is layed out is exactly how it i envisioned it but probably couldn't put into words as good as you did. I greatly appreciate the kind words and the analysis of the set. That made my day, week and month.

p.s - can we spoon?

I have hard copies. I will make sure to set one aside for you.
Rob was suppost to host up a continues mix for me as well, but he failed. LOL, no biggie. I figured it would be best to track this one since the mixes are so quick that It would give people a chance to see when things are dropped.

Leutwyler and I talk just about every day. He’s the ing man, it’s an older track on there but still one of my favorites from him. He has some new stuff coming out soon that I have gotten a chance to preview and its pretty damn ace.

I absolutely love that Saiz remix. It’s probably the one surprise on the mix that people probably wouldn’t expect me to play but I love laying broken beat tracks on top of minimal.
LOL .. 4 hour set, let me see what I can do ~ wink

I wasn't able to take this whole mix in all at once as I got to listen to bits and pieces at work. The music isn't quite my taste, but after getting through the whole mix, I was VERY impressed with your ability and how your mixing/track integration came across to the listeners. Thank you for the prelude so I knew kinda what to expect. I watched my ITunes for the next track to start just so I could see/hear what you were accomplishing, and I have to say I'm still very impressed. Definitely giving this another listen when I can sit through the whole mix at once. Have some long drives this weekend, so I'll tackle it then.
