im glad you like both of them they are both good but i found the statement about "bender and arsen took over that sound that preach preached at aria" kinda out of place

nono you didnt get it
when i say took over i dont mean they have the same style
it means arsen&bender's sound is a more mature version of what preach played, electro-tech has evolved and even preach imo has evolved.. wasn't the same vibe

Circus just don't feel the need to enter contests to make believe that they are the best in the world... we know we are. LOL

Heh.

It's understandable that every promoter wants to hype his nights and clubs he works at - but damn, get a grip.

Because you go to Stereo and count heads, right?

Dude, Circus has THREE rooms- one of which is a hiphop room. It's the only hiphop room in an afterhours setting on the island of MTL! Of course your head counts are gonna be somewhat higher- hiphop is popular and your club's the only one providing it.

As well, with THREE rooms going on, your overall club capacity is obviously higher than Stereo's. And with 3 rooms, I'm assuming you're attempting to cater to THREE kinds of music lovers. Whereas Stereo attempts to cater to TWO (house on a very regular basis and trance every now and then)...so again, I hope your numbers are somewhat higher when you combine ALL THREE ROOMS together. But tell me that your main house room is more packed than Stereo's room- I tell you straight up, that is highly untrue.

Not to play the comparison game but since you already are, I will too. Circus has ALWAYS had a bad reputation in comparison to Stereo. ALWAYS. The stuff that's happened to me at your club is really disgusting, dangerous and downright scary- gang related issues are not issues for the customers to deal with! Hopefully, that situation has improved. I've never once in my measley 3 yrs of afterhours had to deal with that kinda stuff at Stereo.

As a matter of fact, Circus has always had a bad reputation compared to ANY other afterhours. Don't get me wrong, I've had a few decent nights there. The time D-Formation played in 2006 (not his NYE gig with Lawler, the time before that) and the time Creamer & K played together was awesome. That's it though. It's now 2008 and the best booking I've seen from you guys really wasn't even that good...Tom Pooks: fantastic producer, not-so-fantastic DJ. Now you guys have Thomas Gold coming: again, fantastic producer, but unaware of his DJing skills. Stop booking producers as DJs in the sideline Gallery room and get some real DJ talent up in that main room!

And at the end of the day, having a bigger crowd than your competition doesn't make you better. I've seen Stereo's room roll to an amazing vibe with only 450 people in the room. And it was possibly one of the best nights I'd had there. I haven't seen one decent booking from you guys that is comparable to what Stereo does every single month. Stereo is consistent without fail, and they have hands-down THE BEST locals playing on their roster. And finally, if Stereo is "make-believing" and "pretending" that the club is one of the best in the world by entering contests, why is it that SO many people (including some of the artists they book there) completely and totally agree? See below:

"Stereo in Montreal is every DJ's wet dream!” laughs Sander Kleinenberg, clearly an admirer. “The soundsystem is unique and the vibe during the infamous after-hours is legendary. There is simply no place like it anywhere in the world and some of my best DJ memories so far lay in that amazing DJ booth."

:)

Just my opinion in the end though right? Sorry for it being so long.

Anyways back to the night: I thought you said Preach was gonna play until closing? Why did he leave at like, 7h45-8h00am? Or is that when the Gallery room closes?

From what I've read on this board in the past, lots of people wanted straight up techno to make a huge comeback in this city. But from what I'm reading OVERALL, it seems even Preach couldn't do it! :( Nonetheless, congrats to the PU crew on the fulfillment of your night- I'm super proud and very sorry I couldn't make it out :) Keep it coming boys :D

Because hot girls is THE ONLY reason why people go out to an afterhours? Come on...

It's funny that it's just the employees who are saying those nice things...

Talk about lack of flow! Unless Deadmau5 has made a techno bomb that I'm totally unaware of. :conf:

80% of the numbers at circus is because of the mainroom

Money-wise and headcount-wise

Hip hop isnt as strong as it used to be and thats a fact in any club in the city

You cant talk all you want about other clubs booking and all

But the vibe in general is always great on each night

Different clientele... different market... but some similarities

You can book the top 100 djs out there... every single weekend... but who's making money at the end of the day ?

Us

More and more you see that we're trying to bring new talent

Some fresh stuff

Obviously the hating part on the boards keeps us far away from internet

We don't really need to do bookings overall... we simply enjoy to have something new and solid once in a while

Who's loosing 1.2 million right now ?

No need to come hate in here

I don't pollute stereo threads about how bad they are doing financially

So take it easy and don't bash like that

1st of all, I was talking to your promoter, Fran666. He's talked ALOT in this thread already, why can't he answer for himself now? 2nd, you didn't even care to acknowledge 90% of the stuff I said besides the headcount thing.

Talking about hate, maybe you should take a long, hard look at your own (your promoter saying Circus doesn't need to enter competitions like Stereo; that you guys KNOW you're the best, come on! What's this based on?) Arrogance is not sexy.

Stereo doesn't book Top 100 DJs every single weekend. I dunno where you got that from. New talent and fresh stuff is what everyone's looking for, all the time. But one must think ahead of time if that new and fresh talent will pull people onto your dancefloor. And I'm not hating- I'm voicing an opinion. When others do it, it's an opinion- When I do it, it's hate. :conf:

I don't pollute Circus threads let alone any club's threads about how bad they're doing financially. I know nothing nor did I ever claim to know anything regarding ANY club's finances. Where, when, why and how did club's finances come into the picture? Oh yeah, YOU brought it up. And you're supposed to be what? Owner? Manager? Now, that looks good on you huh?

I don't care what club makes more money. I'm talking as a fan of the music and of the scene like many people on this board, not as a club owner. Bringing up finances is just wrong for a public forum and a very low blow. At the end of the day, Stereo puts out more in terms of musical credibility and that makes the public more happy with name STEREO than CIRCUS which has, over time, lead to the generalization that STEREO is overall, a better club than CIRCUS.

If money is the only factor that makes or breaks a club, if it's the only thing that matters, then you my friend have sold out like so many others on what it is to provide good solid music to a scene and contribute to it.

Anyways, I know you know what I was saying. You just don't like reading a strong, coherent argument that goes against your club. Which is totally natural. But don't go putting words in my mouth that were never even remotely close to being there. You take it easy too!

/end of posts on this topic. I promise :p

I have a question: Is PU gonna bring other artists in the future now too? Like, a monthly PU night at Gallery with invited guests? That would be cool :)
Pizerz
OK!

Gotta be completely honest here, I think this time pretty much stacks up to the time I saw The Machine play at Aria on NYE with Infected Mushroom.

Although I would've liked to see Preach destroy the main room, this was good enough.

MAD SHOUT OUT to Preach when he cut the volume on the Broken Inside Remix, and "sang" the melody!

I got one question tho, if anyone has his June 2008 Techno Mix, I NEED to know what song is playing at 32:00 mins. I was listening to the set on the way, and when he dropped that song on Saturday, me = dead. No matter how sober or whacked you are, I don't know a song like that doesn't make you wanna dance your ass off!

Edit: Preach needs to bring this kinda Techno and energy back to MTL. MOFOLITI YOU CRACKER, GET IT STARTED!

I think for techno n minimal, its mutek and piknik electronik that deivers in mtl (not perfectly sure cuz I'm an ousider...)
The talent brought to piknik is quite something from what I read.

Preach played much harder than when I saw him at wemf last year, but I still prefered him wemf performance because he was spot on then. (His set was techno that nite)

Re; hot chick@ afterhours....well that's only good for pple wanting to pick up or to make a hip hop crowd drool. Personally, when I go clubbing, especially afterhours, hot chicks is my last priority. I'm there for the music, have a good time...and surround myself with some of the ladies to shield myself from being gropped by guys lol

Re: deadmau5 it certainly wasn't a new techno track lol. And of course I can't track I'd for the life of me, so I can't say which one it was. It does pa-pa-pa...
He layered some parts of that song for a while ;(

In mtl, I've been to stereo twice (chus n ceballos last year around july 20 and this winter for. Lee burridge), once to metropolis for villalobos, and pepsi center for S+D.
Leaving the last 2 and comparing only stereo and circus, here are my observations (non-biased, from an out of towner).

Stereo has bookings that are more well-know. The sound-system is the best I have seen and the vibe is top nottch, bar none. It feels like a family in there, everyone smiling and having a good time. That makes the vibe.

Circus, is more spacious by having 3 rooms. It has more decor and ample bathrooms(and clean). I really liked the seating on the sidelines to relax. The sound system was quite good from what I witnessed on saturday. However, there was a lack of friendship, amicality, vibe in there. Unlike stereo, pple don't respect no-smoking and it didn't feel like the staff was doing anything about it. I didn't see smoking areas (I didn't search tho).

Regarding the hiphop room,i didn't check it out much, but I don't think it got busy when I was there. Whether such a room fits in an edm/after hours, I don't think so as the music is the same as any top40 club. And with the lack of alcohol, it deters many patrons (top40 crowd prefers booze, edm likes drugs.....I know this a generalization, don't flame!)
