I can remember a somber winters eve around the year 2000 playing quake 2 and chilling in irc with my pals on my 56k modem. It was a great time as quake 2 was just in its prime and there were games being played left and right, then I started to lag a bit didnt know why, about 2 hours later the ISOSR1 mix that was played IRC-channel wide finished downloading. It was played by someone over IRC again. After that I heard sounds coming from my speakers due to me not knowing IRC's auto-sound downloader downloaded it and it started playing on my computer as well. Since I was a quake2 noob I thought it was a tune in the game and didnt pay any attention to it.
Then 2 days after it was played again but this time I didnt have quake 2 loaded. Low and behold it was the IRC client playing it, I immediately inquired on to what genre it was due to me falling in love with it. I later purchased ISOSR2, yahoo'd the word "Trance" and found this very forum but didnt sign up till I got the guts to sign up here. Heard a few Ferry Corsten Trance nation mixes on shoutcast radio after I got cable as well.

At the time, i was into alternative rock. I started veering into EDM when the rock radio stations were playing Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy.
Then I fell in love with Alice Deejay, moving on to Oakie's Tranceport and MOS' Trance Nation 2.
After a hearty stay in epic trance, I was whisked away by Markus Shulz and Probspot.
And now Drum N Bass is my new dig, assisted with Dieselboy, Noisia and Black Sun Empire. |

| Back when original Half-Life Deathmatch was in its peak (the memories..) I never really listened to any trance before, and in 2000 when I was playing online on my bro's pc I found Tiesto's Sensation 2000 set, had that pumping whilst i was playing and was hooked since. |

What's with all the gaming stories?
It's all about the cheesy dance music in the 90's. i.e. DJ Quicksilver, Sash!, PF Project, Mike Koglin, Brainbug, Binary Finary, etc.
Those were the artists that started me off. |

I consider myself to have very wide musical tastes within the field of dance music. I'm just as happy at a 124BPM tech house night as I am at a 150BPM psy-trance party.
Outside of electronic I'm a bit narrower, tending only to like harder rock groups like Tool, Rammstein, Opeth and Sevendust, though I like a bit of Foo Fighters and that kind of thing too, and some classical and jazz. |

My biggest leap into the 'scene' was when I was flicking through radio stations one Friday evening about 10pm in early 1998. I came across the 30min Judge Jules mix at the end of his show and was hooked. I had a stereo that could record onto tapes so scrambled to get one in and record it.
Between Jan 1998 and July 2000 I barely left the house on a Friday night, even baseing my first job around making sure Friday night was free to record the Judge Jules show. I think I kept Memorex and TDK in business buying cassettes!
At that time I was too young (and at boarding school) to go to nightclubs so I lived vicariously through those who did by listening to those shows. |
