right now working with a Thinkpad, 1.6Ghz 512 DDR.
Can't seem to run Ableton with more than a few layers without freezing everything. Seems like it should be able to handle it.
What's the least I can get away with if I purchase something new? |

| What all do you plan on doing with it and what's your budget? If it's just Ableton slowing down, you may be able to get away with just a adding some bigger sticks of RAM. |

I'd love to have something that could run around 20 layers simulaneously unfrozen (a bit exagerated I'm sure); The whole idea of the laptop is to get me away from my production PC so I can do this anywhere. Just can't sit still in front of that PC, so I'd rather use it for the final stages of my productions.
So I suppose I need at least 2 gigs of RAM? 1.6Ghz proc is enough I assume? |

| What model processor is it? 2 Gigs should be a good minimum for a production pc. |

Hmmm... it's gonna come down to where you plan to go with it I guess. While a 1.6ghz should be better running with 2+ gigs of ram, it's still a borderline machine that you may not want to waste too much moolah on.
I'd say that if you just want a little more headroom to be able to play around in ableton, try a RAM upgrade. (your cheapest option).
However, if you plan to do a little more with it (i.e. start playing out, producing, adding hardware and whatnot) then you may want to assess those future needs and plan on upgrading to a heftier system. |

| open up your largest project and check your ram usage (ctrl + alt + delete -> performance). 512 isn't alot, so i think it is pretty likely. also, you need to keep your OS very clean. try to minimise the number of background progs you have open. |
