just whipped my hd clean and reinstalled xp pro on it and can't get the damn drivers to install.

I gots an IBM ThinkPad r51. I downloaded the latest drivers from IBM's support site especially the network drivers so can get the slugger going to update the other needed drivers.(i'm using another pc to download->transfer on usb stick->plug and install)

When the drive executable is launched, the show runs like it's suppossed to, I've done it before; only thing now is that even after I install the new drivers, the drivers aren't detected by windows even though they exist physically on the drive, let alone IBM install software.

what am I doing wrong? It's getting really frustrating as I've been picking my brain for 2 days and still can't figure out what the eff I'm doing wrong this time, or why aren't the drivers installing or benig recognized as being there. And no I still can not use my network card to connect this brick to the net.

All help is appreciates, I thank you all in advance.

Al.

Right click on the My Computer icon then click on Manage. Look through the event viewer for any errors. That might give you a clue as to what is going wrong.

Can't help with your immediate problem, but it always helps to keep a collection of drivers that you know work on a CD backup disk so when you do a system sweep you can just pop it in and install everything right away.

I made a CD like that, I know what your talking about.

My only concern was only they got new updates that might not work with the bios upgrades I had done with the previous swip.

You may want to try Unknown Device Identifier and see if it can give you the device info and then you google your drivers not having to go thru IBM. Also instead of updated drivers see if you can search IBM's support site for original drivers and not any updated ones. They should be good enough to at least get you online to get the rest of the drivers on there.

did you do all the updates for XP first?

You will need to install all updates for XP (i.e. service packs + critical updates) then the drivers for the IBM do to the fact that the drivers are not always backwards compatible.

I can't install the new updates because I can't connect the slugger and to find the ones I need, it'll take way too much time and there's tones of them ever since I got the XP license.

I'm afraid to flush the BIOS.

Update....I used IBM's installer to get all the drivers except the modem and network to work. Still holding up on those 2....emailed IBM also.

Just download SP3 from your other PC. I believe MS offers a package install that you could move over on your thumbdrive. That should take care of all updates heretofore.

Umm..WRONG. Please refrain from giving advice on things you are clueless about. A driver that says "WinXP" is compatible with ALL service pack versions of it. Why? Because the OS itself has not changed the driver structure, the interfacing method between the devices, and the way in which drivers work for that OS.

Yep, here it is. :) Have fun!

Also, the reason your driver isn't installing, is due to the fact that the IBM Installer, just extracts the driver. You need to right click on my computer and click manage. Click "Device Manager". Find the network card in the "?" marked devices, and right click and click "update driver". Then click install from a list or specific location, then click browse and navigate to the location the driver was extracted to. This should solve your problem, and then you may run windows update.

that's the first thing I've done. If that worked I wouldn't have started this thread. Basically the machine can not detect the drivers.

It didn't do that for the other ones, I tried and I know I've done it right, IBM's installer app recognizes them on lookup, all except the most important one I need.

I shall try this SP3 animal.

I'll post results

Can you please post a screenshot of your device manager? I have a hunch of something, but I need to see this first.
