im looking to get into production. im going to go about it very slowly since i dont have any music background or knowledge yet but its something i want to work at and over time take classes etc etc. in the meantime though i want to study up on music theory as much as i can. are there any good books on the subject you guys can reccomend?

i like this one cause it puts in a simple perspective, it's not super in depth but it's enough to get you started and later you can get some more specific books for harmony, counterpoint, etc, if you want....anyway, start with this!

edit: on second thought, reading the reviews, it seems it isnt really too beginner-friendly, that is if you have zero knowledge, but whatever, i think this is as simple as it gets for covering almost all aspects of theory...id recommend just reading the real basic on the net...

It's been a loooong time since I took my Intro to Music Theory course, so I can't remember the title or author of the book we used, but it was excellent. However, I would recommend that you check out the bookstore of a local college or university to see what they're using for their introductory music theory course - just an educated hunch, but it will probably be much better than any of the "Hal Leonard Music Theory for Dumbasses" that you could buy from amazon.com. ;)

Also, check out some of the free resources on the web - wikipedia has a lot of good information that can get you going. Of course, you have to be careful because there's also a lot of misinformation out there.
