Why is that?
It's dance music -- and it's made using electronics and computers, just like trance or house... |

Because you don't just define a genre based on intention and equipment. Anyway been there had that argument. There needs to be a term to refer to dnb house, trance etc AND ambient, downbeat experiemental and edm is pretty much it right there. |

"EDM" isn't a genre. It's an umbrella term that refers to lots of different genres -- and the only thing those genres all have in common is that they're made primarily with electronics and computers and have a regular beat for dancing -- which also means that the term "EDM" doesn't cover ambient music and a lot of experimental stuff. |

Hip Hop was the first EDM to gain popularity
Afrika Bambaataa > Trance
Whether you like it or not, Hip Hop and Rap ARE EDM |

| But if we take into consideration the word "underground" in the subject title things might be different. hip hop/rnb is also incredibly mainsteam right now. I don't know many people who listen to actual underground hip hop/rnb. |

| House. Of the more maximal variety like AVH etc. I think from 98-00 trance had a lead for a while though, certainly in Europe anyway. |
