i've heard mandarin is one of the harder languages to learn. good luck :p

Utter nonsense. There are just two "difficult" things about Mandarin, for most speakers of European languages:

  • The phonology (i.e. the sounds)
  • The written system (which has nothing to do with the language)

The grammar, as a whole, is pretty much like Lego. Words are considerably tiny, they usually come the way you expect them to come (that is, Subject-Verb-Object), and you don't need to bother with declension and stuff like that.

So, no, Chinese shouldn't be harder than any other language.

Hey guys. I'm in the same boat as well for next semester.

Arabic or Chinese?

Aren't they both basically the most difficult to learn? And again, which do you think would be potentially most beneficial?

You should first decide which language you would actually wantto be able to speak. Coz if your starting of with a language for the sheer economic aspect of it, you'll never keep it up.

Study a language you feel is worth your time and commitment. Else you'll drop out in no time anyway.

Why is it not worth your time and commitment to learn a language based on the economic aspect and your job future?

There are plenty of random languages I want to be able to speak, but whats the point in wasting my time learning them when I wont be able to use those languages in the US?

To the OP, learn mandarin.

If one feels that it is, let him do, by all means.

Let me put my opinion into perspective though. When i mean studying a language i dont just mean taking some courses for half a year or so. Before my current studies i graduated as a translator so languages are something i've been dealing with for quite some time. I wouldnt be able to just pick a language and give it my full attention for several years just for the money.

I guess you have to go with a combination of what you would like to do and what is the most usefull.

The same applies to Arabic, regarding complexity. Sure, all languages require a lot of effort in order to be mastered, but they don't differ that much in complexity from one another. They're all logic, so to speak, otherwise it would be extremely difficult for native speakers to form novel sentences.

And, should there be an über-complex language, it certainly isn't a language spoken by more than 10 million peope, because they're learnt by immigrants and millions of children all the time.
