no, and that's a slippery slope that you can apply to any issue where age restrictions apply. why not raise the driving age to 18? why not lower the drinking age to 14? why not let a 16 yr old serve in the military?
sex with 10 yr olds typically involves pedophelia, a well documented disorder. it can also easily be demonstrated that a 10 year old does not possess the emotional and physical capacity or development to make informed, consentual decisions about sex. I'm not convinced the same can be said of 14 and 15 yr olds...particularly today's 14 and 15 yr olds.
let me put it this way...
I'd prefer to see an explanation as to why the line is better drawn at 16 vs 14...with some evidence rather than using a scare-tactic illustruction of 'internet predators'. So innocent 14 year olds are routinely being fooled and end up hooking up with some old perv from the net? come on. So they're saavy enough to be cruising the net and meeting up with an adult, without their parents knowing...but aren't mature enough to make decisions about consensual sex? Shouldn't parents also know wtf is going in in the lives of their 14 and 15 yr olds?
the age of consent has been in place for decades, yet needs to be changed now? why? what has happened that necessitates or legitimizes this change? what evidence or research supports this change? why are exisiting laws insufficient?
let me be clear. I'm not saying it's necessarily "bad" to change it and I certainly don't think it's "good" for some 40 yr old to a 14 year old...but I'm also not sure (in the absence of hard evidence to the contrary) that this ought to be criminalized. I think it's immoral, but that doesn't automaticlly mean it should be illegal.
I'll suggest the gov't is doing it because it's a poplular idea among their supporters and voters...or perhaps even in the wider population that is ignorant and to them it just "sounds good" (like street racing legislation, like not decriminalizing pot, etc) not becuase there is an overt need for the legislation.
just my take on the matter.
I don't think gays need be concerned, despite the criticism in the article. the day that antiquated 'buggery' laws are enforced regarding a pair of consenting 17 yr olds is the day that the gay community will mobilize like you've never seen before, lol.
I do think that education is important, as I do feel that the laws will not be interpreted properly. As it is, you have teens out there thinking the HPV vaccine means they can have unprotected sex, lol. ffs! |
