Further study advice for US Universities (Recording Arts)

Hey everyone,
I'm considering pursuing further studies in the US, start of next year and have a few questions:
What's the difference between private US universities and a 'community' college? From my understanding, community colleges are a lot cheaper, give more flexibility to finish your course (longer time frame). On the flipside, I've heard that due to the lower costs, facilities are often lacking and so is the faculty. Is that still the case now or does that depend from college to college? Which are some of the better community colleges for Recording Arts / Fine Arts?
A little background about myself, I already have a B.Eng in Electrical Engg., from Bangkok,Thailand and have been working as an acoustics / installed sound design engineer for 4 years.
I'm reluctant to do another B. Eng because of the time I'd have to invest, another 4 years. However, I'm pondering over the option of either:
- Applying for a 4 year course (Recording Arts) with the hope that I might get advanced standing based on my work experience and prior coursework. (I don't really need to re-do basic courses such as Math I/II / Physics I / Computer Basics etc.). This way, my study period might be cut down to 3 years, at best, 2.
or
- Applying for an Associate Degree program. Is an Associate Degree valued less than a Bachelor's Degree because of the period of study? What if you already have a Bachelor's Degree and this is just for further academical enrichment?
I'd also be greateful if some of you who're already in similiar programs could point me in the right direction.
I'd prefer West / East Coast colleges.
After some searching, these are some that I've come up with, please suggest others that I may've missed out:
- City College of San Francisco (Associate Program in Broadcast Media Electronic Media Arts)
- Sonic Arts Center City University of New York
- Full Sail School (Orlando) (I've heard mixed stories about this school)
- New York University (Tisch School of The Arts)
Thanks! |

| What about Graduate School? Can't you go for a Masters Degree in your field of study? |

Not really, since I already have a Bachelor's in a different discipline I don't satisfy the degree requirements for a Masters Degree.
Besides, most Recordings Arts / Music Technology courses don't generally admit students directly into their Master's program if they've not followed the career path (Bachelor's first) or unless they demonstrate exceptional musical ability. |

+1
But prepare to be in debt the rest of your life if you don't land a good job after graduation (which you probably will, but prepare) |
