While we are asleep it seems like our brains run completely differently from our normal thought process.

The current accepted theory regarding why we have dreams is that our brain whips up crazy scenarios and comes up with a reaction towards that scenario. While we sleep our brain is programming itself to react in different scenarios. If you've ever had to react to something fast and your body reacted seemingly by itself then you can thank your dreams :)

This is also why people who are scared of horror movies often have nightmares after watching one. Deep down the brain believes that whatever happened in the horror movie could become a real life scenario and the brain attempts to program itself to deal with that scenario. From reading this thread zombies seem to be a common theme.

Also, we dream every night whether we remember them or not. When we remember a dream it is because the brain is interrupted during the dream. This is why we seem to always remember our nightmares because the increased adrenaline interrupts the brains sleeping pattern.

Dreams don't always have to deal with bad things though :) I see sex as a scenario where the brain might want to come up with a pre-programmed reaction!

Edit: Figured i'd give a source for my ramblings.

Yeah highway 92 is just the big "landmark road" around here, guess it wouldn't be if you live outside of the Cobb / Marietta area. :p

That is actually really cool. I saw something on Discovery channel a few nights ago where they were discussing how most of the "learning" the brain goes through is done in your sleep, so that makes a lot of sense.
