| quote: | NEW YORK - Nearly seven miles of Manhattan streets, including a stretch of Park Avenue, will be closed to traffic for three Saturdays this summer as part of an effort to create more open space for recreation, city officials said Monday.
The program, called Summer Streets, is modeled after similar temporary street closures in cities around the world, including Bogota, Colombia; Guadalajara, Mexico; and El Paso, Texas.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced the plan with Lance Armstrong at his side, said he hoped to encourage cycling and other fitness activities and "give us an opportunity to be tourists in our own city, and see it anew."
The route, stretching from the Brooklyn Bridge in lower Manhattan to East 72nd Street along Centre and Lafayette streets and Fourth and Park avenues, will be off-limits to traffic from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 9, 16 and 23. Several crosstown streets along the route will remain open. |
