If you could be immortal..

In 40-50 years time, maybe earlier, computers would be smarter than us and we could then upload our brain basically into a microchip, making us non-organic.
Flip side is that we could be conscious forever. Could travel long distances across the universe and maybe just meet other species ala Brainiac from superman.
Would you consider this, or would you just perish cause the idea of immortality scares the out of you.
I would..however I'd like the self destruct button implemented in case I get bored or something. |

That wouldn't render anyone immortal. You can't really upload a physical object, but just the information it contains (if it's a device that processes information, such as a computer or our brain). If you attempt to upload your "consciousness", your brain with your information will still be where it is now - in your body - and you'll just happen to have a clone. If you delete all the information from your current body, and leave just the clone intact... well, I'd be inclined to believe that you'll have become a vegetable and you'd just be functionally replaced by a clone.
Not to mention that chips, just like human organs, decay over time.

I'm sure that, if this sort of "trans-carnation" were possible, society would consider this a form of suicide, and having one of these buttons would probably be forbidden. |

So does the human brain. It's only a matter of time before computers match it...and are equipped with the same senses we have. |

| no it doesn't. Computers calculate faster than the brain does, and it's all computers can do. The brain is a VERY complex neural network, and though very simple computer-based neural networks exist, they use immense calculating power to similate something VASTLY inferior to the human brain. |
