So tonight I will be spinning pop/rock/hiphop at a party in our rooming house. I've done this a couple of times but this time I want to be really mixing the tracks. My gear will be a bcd 2000 + Laptop with NI Traktor 3.2. Any advice for a this kind of music?

I hope I can sneak in some EDM ;)

Make a spreadsheet of all the songs in your "crate" with 3 columns:

1/2 bpm | bpm | 2x bpm

for quick reference.

Mix away.

edit: also utilize Traktor's looping function.

mixing hip hop is easy

know that your mixes won't be long and drawn out like EDM, they usually last on average ~30sec

just make sure you pick tunes in the same bpm range

also, realize that you don't need to beatmatch every mix, it sounds good but ultimately, your average top 40 crowd could care less about beatmatching, it's more about the actual songs you play and how they flow, quick, on beat cuts or quick fades will work (think radio mixes)

the night went really well...I was mixing 9 hours and everybody had a great time. The last song was Violet from Coldplay(at 7:30 AM) and still some people were dancing.

now I'm completly ed up and hung over :)

At least some top 40 crowds know how to party. Still dancing at 7am. Awesome. Sounds like you did your job.
