TORONTO - Canada's justice minister says impaired drivers will soon face stiffer fines, increased jail time and mandatory roadside tests when new rules kick in next week.
Speaking in Toronto Friday, Rob Nicholson says drivers suspected of being high will no longer be able to refuse roadside sobriety tests. Police can also take suspected drug-impaired drivers to the police station for a more intensive test or give a blood, urine or saliva sample.
Nicholson says impaired drivers will face a minimum $1,000 fine for a first offence and up to a month in jail if they're caught a second time.
He says the government is also closing "one of the great loopholes" by making it harder for drivers to challenge breathalyzer tests in court.
IMO, the fines and jailtime cannot be high enough.

personally, I think the fine should be minimum $10,000.00 plus a 5 year suspension of your driver's licence. After you get your licence back then you can only drive with a licenced driver with at least 10 years driving experience in the passenger seat.

if I get a $1000 fine,, i will sell my piece of shet car and take the bus..
note** i have never been caught in the last 5 years of tokin up!
honestly, people that are in a rush, have rage and drive waay too fast should just relax and smoke one. When i am sober I drive fine but other drivers piss me off, that is why i need something to calm me down.

when someone drives intoxicated they are putting my life at risk for no good reason....I can accept that accidents happen but I cannot accept someone driving while intoxicated and causing an accident.
I've seen a lot of bad things in my job when it comes to some idiot drunk or high driver. I've seen the dead bodies on the 401 and have seen how the families have been destroyed because someone has driven intoxicated.
