| Well when I used to listen to pop I liked a lot of stuff that was pretty crap. Still not that bad compared to some others though... Eminem-Marshall mathers lp and Paris Avenue-I want you are still good at least. I never really got into mainstream trance that much... I bought gatecrasher classics and then quickly realised there isn't too much trance thats all that good. I used to like eurodance (especially aqua) when I was like 7 though. Then ofcourse after having a short discussion with my dad about how gatecrasher classics cd 1 is somehow different to the club eurodance channel on cable I don't exactly feel so bad about that :nervous:. I never really got into hard trance/hardstyle (except for cosmic gate) unlike a lot of others. I've allways much prefered everything else over house... and that hasn't exactly changed. Although I did listen to house on the radio when there was no other edm to listen to. Recently I've been getting into techno... I used to be totally mind melted by tech trance... and then techno but now I can listen to it and understand it its bloody awesome. |

I find it best to evaluate my previous musical tastes whilst remaining mindful of the larger context of things during that point in time.
I became hugely fond of some thoroughly EPIC Epic Trance around the point in which I found myself largely uninterested in the new music in general ( around 2001). I found myself thoroughly taken by the climactic, developmental, and melodically minded structure of Epic Trance, and latched on to it immediately. Retrospectively, and looking through some of various releases in my catalogue, this was some thoroughly dreadful music, but if I look back at it in embarrassment, it's in a most benign, most playful manner that I do so- it simply seemed relevant and meaningful at that point in my life.
Contrasting this with the music I'm currently listening to (Tech Hose, Techno), I would still be reluctant to look at this transition and the various stops in between as necessarily a transition from ignorance to knowledge. At some point, either through evaluation of its own merits or through contrast with different music I became exposed to (Prog. House), Epic Trance became a whole lot less special, and a whole lot less satiusfying to listen to, but it certainly made sense at one point.
I think there was certainly some conditioning involved, though. I doubt that most of the tracks I've fawned over during the past few months would have even received a complete listen from me seven years ago, but I think it was due to the accessibility of the music I was listening to earlier that sort of eased me into what I'm listening to now.
Who knows, I may find myself making the same post I'm making now, with 'Epic Trance' supplanted by 'Tech House.' I'm not sure to what extent the overexposure and mere fatigue I may have had with Trance is influencing my enjoying what's almost its antithesis, but all I know now is that I like it.
There is one exception to this rather gracious and forgiving tone I've taken towards my past musical tastes, and that's Poison. I will always be embarrassed for liking Poison. |

That pretty much sums up me nowadays, a lot of the clubbing I do is trance and hard dance oriented, and I've been off my face to all the anthems etc. I think you can still do stuff like that and appreciate the 'finer' or more artsy forms of dance as it were like techno, deep house, tech-house etc |

ie. dual musical personality syndrome (that's not an official term or anything, i just made it up :p )
i'd say it's something i adopt. on some days i can be quite a nazi when it comes to criticising the majority of trance for all its shortcomings and i'll often end up going off in search of fresh underground proghouse-progpsy hybrids. on other days i'll quite happily bang on a tiesto mix & reach for the proverbial lasers. both suit me equally
i don't look back in shame on my old tastes. as a whole i still like the same music now as i did 10 years ago, and before that i was too young to know better. i'm slightly wary of people that are embarrassed to have once liked music they now supposedly find cheesy.. i get the feeling some of them are being led too much by the opinions of others and not being true to themselves. it's easy to slate something when everyone around you is looking down on it... |

until 2003, rock.
After that, trance until about mid-2005. The "cheese" trance at that, like Armin, Tijschrist, and that ilk. It was around then that I picked up a set of decks and soon thereafter got completely tired of the sound and branched on to progressive house first. After I grew weary of that I branched on to techno/tech house, and now I'm sitting at just about anything. Right now I listen to a plethora of stuff including IDM, dubstep, trip-hop, neo-folk, psychedelic, and other . I don't really listen to too many dj sets any more, but on the rare occasion.

I don't really look down upon my previous tastes all too much as they helped me get to where I am today. I can look at the artists today that I used to like and see how bad they have gotten (who knows, maybe they were as bad then as they are now, and maybe it's pure nostalgia that fuels me to still sorta like what they did in the past), but I think I am too engrossed in finding new music to really care about what I lived on in the past. |
