Every time I see a "Pro" studio video (Ian Carey, Freemasons etc...), I see a piece of equipment sat right in front on the desk, which is like a big volume knob which controls the monitors output.

What is this piece of equipment called "officially", I've searched on Dolphin Music and I can't see anything like it. And can anybody recommend a particular brand pls?

I believe thats the Mackie Big Knob

It is probably a Mackie Big Knob monitor control station. I really would not recommend this unit because it colours the sound.

If you don't want to spend much money, go with the SMPro monitor controller, and if you want to get something that has more features, so with a Presonus COntrol Station. Both of these units are passive where as the Big Knob uses cheap OP Amps that can color and distort your sound.

I jut replaced my Mackie Big Knob with a Presonus Control Station and the difference is clearly audible. I am however selling my Mackie Big Knob on ebay.

Cheers for the prompt replies!

Think I'll have a look for a Presonus now.

Dissapointing I wanted to get one.

Would that be considered an audio interface or more like a monitor control thing-a-ma-jig?

Its more like a mini-mixer than anything else.

Thanks!

If you get one, be sure to get the Remote along with it.
Be aware, the unit + remote is going to run you around $650 US. The SMPro M-Patch 2 is only around $150.

Am seriously thinking about getting some Roland DS-5 monitors in the next few weeks, but am wondering how to control the volume, cos I want to utilise the SPDIF and keep it 24 bit digital. Any ideas how I could do this?
