Geo-Political Simulator (PC)

this looks to be the game ive been waiting for, for a very long time!

it will be weeks before ive done more than scratch the surface, so i just thought i'd give the political nerds in here a heads up that the english version has been released.

quote:

The first task of the head of State is to form his or her government and choose his or her ministers selected among the country’s top personalities.

Over a thousand measures are available in the game’s different government departments, and operate according to the running of each individual country. A distinction is made between measures directly carried out by the player (ie: dismissing a minister, visiting a hospital, appearing on television, ordering an enquiry to be carried out by the secret services, setting his or her election platform), and the bills he or she may introduce but which must be passed in Parliament – in the case of democratic regimes, quite obviously – (ie: modifying VAT rate, extending retirement age, creating a new tax, banning political parties, increasing social minima, changing the term of office of the head of State...).

The player may also, through his or her organizer, arrange meetings with the country’s influential personalities (trade unions, associations, religious icons, the country’s top stars...), his or her relatives (mother, wife/husband, personal clairvoyant, head of security...), foreign heads of state, internationally celebrated personalities (the pope, the UNO secretary general, a Formula 1 racing world champion...). These meetings enable him or her to negotiate social agreements, enter into military alliances or clinch important economic contracts, corrupt decision-makers, appeal to media darlings, etc etc.

In the end, according to his or her choices and political ability, the player may end up being a humanist president or a ruthless dictator.

In all events, he or she must face a certain number of problems which may act as a threat to his or her powers: considerable budget deficit, outbursts of popular discontent, terrorist groups, international conflicts, economic warfare... and, in the case of democratic regimes, he or she must always strive for re-election and a new term of office!

you can buy and download from the website, or you can wait for it to ship, i believe its called "mission president" or something though. ill let you all know how good it is, but from a new FAQ it seems to be pretty damn intense!

-------

What is the difference between consumption on contract and consumption demand in the trade screen?
Consumption on contract is how much you're importing on special contracts at special prices. Demand is obviously how much your businesses and other international corporations are importing into your country.

What's balance of trade why is it negative?
Balance if trade is an overview of how much you're importing or exporting. The higher the number the more you're exporting, If its negative then dont freak that just means you're importing more than exporting which is not neccessarily a bad thing because your population is still able to buy products at stores (maybe at higher prices, maybe lower who knows) and companies might still be making a profit which can then be taxed if they are importing profitable items.

Why is inflation important?

is the increase of prices within your economy. The ideal target band for inflation is somewhere between 2-4% for a healthy economy

Why are interest rates going up, is there anything i can do?

Higher interest rates could be caused by a combination of government spending, low company and income tax and a large number of cheap import deals signed by the head of state with other governments. You can get a quick overview graph of interest rates for the previous 12 months by pressing F1 and going to the currency tab. from there you can also set the national bank interest rate. if inflation is rising raise the rate if you want to stimulate the economy lower it. In relaity (namely australia and the US governments do not set this but leave it bank boards to do it) this is not the case in GPS for some reason but the consequences of interest rate rises are still reflected on the government in a realistic way.

I keep crashing is this a bug?

Maybe not. Check your popularity. If you suffered a masive drop in popularity for an extended period of time you may have been removed from office and without warning such that the game simply returns you to the menu.

Are democracies harder to play?

Democracies are potentially the hardest political system to play but are easily the most enjoyable. Everything rests upon your popularity rating or polling data which is a live representation of your real time approval rating. Different factors will shift your popularity and some public sentiments may entirely negate any benefit in a situation where people slightly like your health spending but slightly disapprove of your education spending. Beware! While it might be tempting to massively spend lots of state money on programs and introduce lots of new taxation legislation this is will make people expect more of you from that point on even if a few months latter or a year later you can no longer afford to continue funding such programs. Any reduction in funding from the levels they were when you started the scenario will no doubt seriously undermine your popularity and could destabilize the country.

My government is a democracy but i dont understand the system.

Democracies are divided between two systems, the British parliamentary model and the US presidential model. Former British empire dominions such as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and some pacific islands adopt this model. Most republics are US presidential in style.

Parliament

The Good: If the Prime Minister takes a popularity nose dive then he if offered the opportunity to honorably resign and your party elects a new leader of the country. This can be good for keeping the game going no matter what and keeping the party in power even with bad leaders.

The Bad: You can be forced to resign dishonorably and without warning by a resentful cabinet and angry public and this WILL be game over. My advice, take the honorable way out if offered and yes you will be offered to resign honorably many times before you are forcibly kicked out.

Congress

The Good: You are elected for a fixed term directly by the people and cannot be forcibly removed for duration of your mandate.

The Bad: You might have to work with a hostile congress. Your popularity will still fluctuate and if people no longer respect you there’s not a lot you can do for your party at improving election chances so higher risk of Game over should you screw up the job as president.

Why do people hate me in the newspaper?

Well sometimes thats just a fact of life, some people just hate successful people liek yourself. As a leader of your country you must get your face on TV and in the newspaper by going to government window, clicking the head of state tab and nagigating to the communication sub tab where you can select options such as appear on TV, attend a public event or visit a public place. These actions will be reported on and you will gain a popularity boost. but this will be useless if you gain +1 for attending a public place and - for negative comments made by the coal mining syndicate leader. use your secretary/organiser to arrange a meeting for disgruntled individuals and ask them to speak highly of you in public. if they wont then ask a celebrity to (people in GPS as they ar in real life are retarded and believe celebrities anyday).

I'm in an election campaign mode, have i made to many comitments?

Stick to a simple re-election campaign making at most 3 promises. 3 is ideal but if you want to keep it even simpler make it 1 such as "lower taxes are the go!" or "with me the country will be safe from terrorism". if you win the election people will expect you to fulfill all your election promises, fail to do so and you'll have an even harder time next election.

I'm eager to spend money, i have it so why not?

Avoid the temptation to rush through sweeping changes when you first start the game. You wont know what you’re doing and it could mean game over. Your country is like a finely tuned machine, any disruption of the system will inevitably cause some disruption and have a flow on effect into other areas you never even heard of.

investing in industries that are void for example australia doesnt have a plastics industry. Is there a way to be able to encourage production in such industries or are u stuck on importation?

subsidise the industries which you want to set up but this will get you kicked out of the WTO (not that thats a problem, those bastards anyway).

Does the game come Putin-ready? :stongue:

I mean, seriously, some of the points on the game, mentioned by PKC, are just so funny makes me wonder if such a game exists or if this is just some political humour. Like, seriously:

In Democracy, I adjusted the income and corporate tax to 0%. While I raised the sales tax to somewhere in the 20-25% range. My rating plummeted. I don't think the political sims thus far have proven to be any good.

well duh. what do you expect would happen IRL if you did that? :p

i have democracy, i didnt mind it, but it was thoroughly simplistic when compared to GPS.

i had a quick game last night as australia, and this is what happened.

i pulled our troops out of iraq, which made people happy. i cancelled all our economic and military ties with the US, and invaded new zealand. i banned and arrested religious cult leaders, and put strict controls on all religious activities. i declared marshall law to put down the protests :D my foreign affairs minister resigned, and the UN were getting pissy with me over my liberation of new zealand. i think i bribed some officials or 2, and i sent zimbabwe some money to help them back on their feet.

you might wanna check this out krypton, its really quite intense and involved. not sure how libertarian you can go with your economic policies (for instance americans are complaining that they cant privatise their health system) but overall im very pleased with how much freedom in the game there is.

oh yes, i forgot to add that it is already out in russian :) not that your english isnt ing excellent! but i believe there are a few language translation issues in the english version, so you might want the russian one anyway :)

to be honest ive partied WAY too hard this weekend to put in the time and effort this requires to fully appreciate it, but its easily the most complex political sim that i know of. dont expect the interface and graphics wow you, but its fairly functional and intuitive. still, a steep learing curve, but there is a spoken tutorial but i havent read the instructions :D but i wont read them til i can print them out at work :)

I wonder how much fun a political game could be to be so expensive

Anyone here play Nationstates?

It's kinda the same thing, only much less deep and with a humorous twist. All of your little decisions get exaggerated and have major consequences for your nation. You can join together with other like minded countries and form your own regions...and you can also raid other regions and conquer them by outstripping their leader in UN endorsements. Once you install your delegate as leader, you can change the aims and motto of the region, and kick out the remaining members who refuse to bow to your rule ;)

It's good fun and only takes a few minutes a day to play. Give it a shot.
