1. Build a couple computers and sell them.

No margins, labor intensive. Unless you can build a better mousetrap than the Michael Dells of the world you'll never break even.

2. Start a "services broker" business. The idea is a client would contact me to ask for the best possible company to fulfill their service need. Say they need a computer repair shop. I would find the computer repair company with the lowest possible price, make a deal with them to cut the profit, and connect the client to the shop. This would require a lot of cold calling, and business negotiating, but I think I'm up for it.

I don't know how you get your edge, but maybe you do. I'd be concerned with a little thing that just came out called the Internet. I'm not sure if you guys have heard of it, but there is a wealth of information out there for anyone with 5 minutes and a keyboard. And it's not just for porn anymore either!

3. Start a portfolio consulting firm. The idea is to offer my stock analysis services to any business or client where I would analyze their investment holdings, and advise them as the quality and valuation of each holding.

If you're good and you can break into some clients to get them to use you, you can make a load of money doing this. But you'd better be good, have something proprietary and be consistent and responsive to your clients. If they see you adding value, they won't mind paying you for your services. As an example, we pay a boutique research firm $75K/year for their services. They publish several reports daily and are generally very accurate information that you just can't get of equal quality from the bulge-bracket sell-side shops. It's basically a one person show, and $75K/year isn't even considered that expensive in this business for a lot of people (especially when it's just a soft dollar expense). Imagine a couple hundred clients paying $75k/year... The only knock of course is that you have no experience or professional track record to help you advertise your services so it might be heard to break into.

Any ideas people?

How old are you again?

you need to build a reputation. The easiest way to do it is by education. While there are certainly other ways, an MBA doesn't hurt. Go to school and let business ideas flow naturally.

Third seems the most logical for your skills :)

21..:o

I pretty much gave up on option 1 and 2. Option 3 would be called Quest Analytics, LLC. My dilemna is as you said, credentials. I will have to think hard about how I can get some sort of credentials fast.

At 21 you're probably better off at least trying to work for some sort of larger organization to get some experience and general business understanding before you go it alone. You have a good idea to work on, develop, and keep in your back pocket until you're ready to hatch it. Don't lose sight of it, but it might be a good idea to have a longer-term plan to get to the point where you do your own thing. Starting from scratch at 21 is definitely a helluva a risky and challenging thing to do. But that's just my opinion. To each his own.

I'm tellin' yea, do something your going to like because once you pick, you'll either be grinding your teeth through the whole ordeal or if you decide to dump, you've just built a new hole for yourself (not to mention a new stress)

Yea, I'm probably going to call all the mutual fund companies in the area, and see if they are hiring. If not, I'll move on to investment securities and stuff. Just looking thru' the phone book, really.

Start a bloodbank in Africa - it would be marketed to wealthy tourists, etc. "What would happen if you needed a blood transfusion in a continent 30% infected with HIV?" Racist as all get-out, but with tourism increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, it could be lucrative. Eventually the upper class of Africans may invest in blood and plasma reserves as well, but until then you'd be going to hell for it.
