i'm generally pretty chatty and outgoing. especially when i'm stoned...but i'm also really sensitive to my surroundings so i can tell when i need to just shut up lol. i'm also a good listener.
then there's those observant moods that strike me once in a while and i just sit around taking everything in. that's usually when i feel out of place though. |
I am usually in the middle. Not too quiet and not too chatty. I love to people watch though. :D

i am loud too. my whole family is...we're like a bunch of ing cubans when we get together (mom's side).
i'll walk into my boss' office to start reporting something to him and he very often has to be like "jamie, i'm right here" and i'm like "oh yea..sorry". :stongue: |

silence can be a beautiful thing, but i think far too many people are unable to realize that.
there are 2 kinds of "chatty" people -- those who are talking just for the sake of hearing their own voice, and those who are talking because they're genuinely excited to be conversing with you. i honestly can't stand being around people who can't break away from their "ME ME ME" mentality and can only discuss what's important to them rather than taking the time to actually listen to the other person(s) involved in the conversation.
i'm naturally a pretty quiet and reserved person, but i have no problem conversing with people who are much louder and much more extroverted than i am, as long as they are as good at listening as they are at talking. i think as long as you have that balance, being chatty doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. |
yea u are definitely the observant type, but you have a presence that shows you have much to say. it's cute:) |

yea you're right. i should have said that "being chatty" isn't a bad thing. talking a lot to the point where people try to avoid conversations with u is horrible. my uncle's wife is like that. she starts stories within stories and u can't escape. she is one of those.
i just straight up interrupt her and say, "sorry i have to pee" and exit stage left lol |
holy i know a bunch people like that its ing crazy
shut the up goddamnit! |

I've always found it weird that people always regarded women as being more talkative then men, when it's clearly just a stereotype1. One of the hypothesis (I apologise in advance for the bad - but useful - puns that will follow), explains that this may be so because women are seen as insideful creatures, rather than insightful creature, so men would rather get into her insides than into her insights... so, if she's talking, she's already talking too much.
Today, I confirmed that this is the case, specially among male chauvinists. We were talking about a really hot (and incredibly intelligent) girl I had just met, and whom they were already acquainted with. Her only fault, they said, is that "she talked way too much". I failed to see that as a problem (hell, she's got interesting stuff to say), but I regarded it as the norm.
What puzzled me, however, is that I've found more and more women complaining about chatty guys. As I expected, this isn't a simple gender difference, but... I still failed to understand. Why would you find a talkative person less attractive solely because of their (somewhat clumsy) communication skills? I'd love to be around talkative people, as long as they had interesting stuff to say.
1 If you read (or worse yet, bought) "Men come from Mars and Women from Venus", I'm sorry, but even though silly ideas do die hard, the previous link has some info on why there isn't a clear-cut difference. |

my issue with the topic is that the observant people in most situations are the most aware, if not the only fully aware people in the room - but the loudest person still usually gets the furthest ahead.
it means the quiet person needs to step out of their shell sometimes, but i think far more might get accomplished in most situations if people just shut up and asked everyone what they wanted/thought.
but the loud people also usually dont want to hear something they dont want to...its pretty much a cyclical problem imho

| that's not always true. i'm loud and chatty but i'm a good listener too. i don't interrupt people or pretend i understand if i don't...i'll ask questions if i'm confused about a story someone is telling me. i'll even ask questions of my own to further understand what they are telling me when i'm genuinely interested in what the person is saying. if i like someone and i'm talking with them (and i don't mean just the opposite sex) i'm actually pretty inquisitive. i like knowing about my friends and what's going on with them and if they're happy, etc... |

well i should add a non-jamie clause to that!
but i do think in most non-friend situations, and even sometimes with friends it is true. but mostly im just grumpy because i think its time to find another job, even tho i am pretty respected by most people there, mostly for not being loud all the time

| yea i was going to mention that it all depends on who you are talking to. i've definitely had my "yea..uh huh *yawn whatever*" moments, but it's usually with the ME ME ME people who just need an audience 24-7 to their stupid rambling. |

Add me to the non-Jamie clause. I'm loud and I do think I can listen to others pretty well! :p

for men, when talking to women: the substance doesn't matter anywhere near as much as the form. |
hmm... interesting claim. But what about the other way around? (i.e. women talking to men)

Oh i can agree on that. However those people are far to few. Almost anybody can learn a few details about a subject to make you interested by what they have to say (a few of the professors at my uni are like that. They couldn't put on an interesting presentation to save their lives, and the only reason why im not asleep like most of the class is because I'm genuinely interested in the subject), but to truly grasp a listeners attention and keep him interested in what you are saying, requires a different skill altogether. A skill that I'm sad to notice many people (who should have it) lack.
Of course all this applies only if we are talking about proper conversation and/or debate. Usually if there is any alcohol involved this theory goes right out of the window. That's the only way i can explain how, a couple of weeks ago while a bit drunk i wasn't at all bored when two friends of mine (who were also drunk) were having a debate about their socks. Then again i did have a rather nice view of both their breats so that probably helped a bit too. |

:D

| Oh yeah +1 to being a loud talker. I always was, but it's worse now that I work with old folks, who don't hear unless you're right up to their ear yelling, lol. |
