Is it just me or are are this press conferences getting to painful to watch? Im not talking about introducing new material, as all three were seriously lacking in that department, im talking more about how bad a presentation they actually put on. Let em explain.
I watched the Nintendo press conference first. I was expecting Reggie to come on stage from the start, grab our attention and dont let go for the length of the conference. Instead we get this woman with an annoying voice that talks about every everything like its the most exciting thing in the world. For the length of her presentation i cant decide if shes talking to us as we were 6 year old kids or if she is talking like a 6 year old kid herself. Just before i pop an aneurysm Reggie comes on. Now that is better. He talks about stupid sales crap but somehow when Reggie speaks, its interesting. He makes the sales figures sound much more interesting than anything that came before (though i will buy that snowboard game!). That is how i like to see a presentation done with personality. However even Reggie can only do so much if he has bad material, so lets just say that this year the only interesting thing about the Nintendo conference was Reggie himself.
Oh almost forgot the bog boss of nintendo and God were there as well. While not as interesting as Reggie or well versed in the english language, mr. Iwata is also interesting to listen. I guess good speakers cant be hindered by language barriers. As for the god of gaming, i have long since lost hope that the man will learn any english (seriously they start teaching them english at such a young age, how come so few of them speak it or even understand it), but no matter. no presenter could have made Wii music interesting even if the presenter was Angelina Jolie and she did a slow striptease throughout the presentation and at the end, did a naked concert alongside naked Uma Thurman, naked Emily Procter and naked Bai ling.
So then i hear that the Nintendo press conference was by far the worst this E3, and it may have well been if we only count content, but my god if we compare presentation it was a like a 2am Ibiza beach barbecue compared to a 5pm dinner party at an old peoples home. FFS watching the MS and Sony conferences were among the dullest three hours i have ever spent in front of my computer. Oh sure, some of the games they showed were great, as an avid RPG fan i loved hearing about Fallout 3 (though i must say that in the gameplay video at least, it strongly resembled Mass Effect. Not that there is anything wrong with that, i love Mass Effect) almost as much as I loved hearing about all the Square Enix projects. I will of course buy everything that Square Enix puts out, as everything looked fantastic.
But that was it. Nintendo managed to make at lest part of its conference interesting, even though they had nothing interesting to show, while the other two conferences were dull beyond belief despite showing some things of interest. Neither of their main presenters showed any personality or enthusiasm on stage (even though they mentioned that they are happy, proud or excited to present something every other minute or so) and it felt like all they put out was an endless stream of information without any real structure. I mean seriously, i put more energy into presenting a school paper than Sony and Microsoft did into presenting their lineup, because if i bored the professor as much as they bored me, he would fail me. it wouldn't matter if my paper was spot on, if i lacked the proper skills to properly present it, it would be considered a failure.
So that is what i would like to see in the future, put someone on stage that can pull off a presentation. If their top wigs cant do it, don't force them on stage, put someone from, oh i don't know, marketing on that, they should know something about making a good presentation. Just spare us the dullnes of the people that bored us this year. |

Weird how that happens, I remember growing up on NES and Genesis, and usually always fought my cousin about which was better, Genesis or SNES (since he always insisted his SNES was far superior) lol. |

Yeah, you would think someone with a bit of passion for gaming, and that is a very good speaker/presenter could be paid to make those press conferences a bit more bearable. Hell, I have some experience and took a course on public speaking and presentation, and felt I could do much better than what they did. |

I agree on all points. They need to take a page out of Apple's notebook or something, or in Nintendo's case, just let Reggie be Reggie. His first E3 a few years ago was great. |

E3 was ROUGH this year to work at....I was up for 68 hours at one point. Between last thursday and wednesday night I had 12 hours sleep TOTAL!
Anyhow, I setup webcasts for all three of the major press conferences...here's how I saw them..
1. Microsoft: Microsoft's conference was w/o a doubt the most unorganized I've ever attended. And it was so un-energetic...most peeps were falling asleep.
Order of events at the MS briefing: Gears of War 2 & Fable 2 --> Let's show the world how much we are willing to blatantly take Nintendo's idea...down to the art style of our characters --> Final Fatnasy XIII ... capping off a press conference with a multi-platform game, even if it's FF13, and now announcing anything special for X360 with it...not a good way to leave a good impression!
2. Nintendo: It's obvious their direction has shifted majorly....focus is moving onto casual gamers. A real, real smart business decision as the casual gaming market...a market which gets little press is EXPLODING and the market range is IMMENSE. So much potential business wise...even if I'm not a fan of it....they are gonna capture the casual gamers market and the regular gaming market (party games have already proven successful with hardcore gamers)
3. Sony: Sony is doing it's own thing and focusing on its own properties. I think Nintendo is going continue to lead because of the direction it's going leaving them in one market, and the other market being a war with Sony vs. MS. MS is in the lead now, but Sony has the future titles. There's zero doubt about it. So many exclusives coming up...so many of them look amazing. X360 is already starting to see a lot of rehashed properties and unless they get some new IPs, Sony is gonna be storming after them in the next couple years.
Once those exclusives start coming out...and once Sony drops the price of the PS3 one more time, I think we are gonna see a HUGE shift...Sony is real real smart on when it's pulls the switch on business moves. I think they are waiting for the right time for that price drop to lay the smack down.
That all said, each system has its own advantages and disadvantages. X360 for things like Xbox Live (Marketplace) and other thing. PS3 for the extra entertainment in Blue Ray movies and the new movie/tv show services it has. Wii for it's interactivity and family focus....just saying that in terms of numbers, I think Nintendo will be on its own in one area while Sony is really gonna start hurting MS and overtake them at some point unless MS changes direction.
If you were at the press conference at E3, you will see how lost MS is...how worried they are. I think they are trying to do too much and it's just going to hurt them in the end.
The changes at executive levels at MS are becoming really appartent..... |
